15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Acts 1:15–26.

There is a great deal to absorb here. Many take this section of Scripture to show that Matthias was chosen to replace Judas. This believe upholds the error of Replacement Theology. But as I studied more closely, I found that this is not true. Christ doesn't replace, Christ adds. From the heresy of Replacement Theology, it is here where the RCC use to uphold their doctrine of Apostolic Succession. This is used to uphold their erroneous position of how they choose their Popes. And the Protestant, Evangelical Christian Church help them by themselves upholding to Replacement Theology. Anyone care to FIND the truth of these Scriptures above and what Peter and the disciples did?

What is Peter doing?

He's disobeying the Lord. He was commanded to go back to Jerusalem and WAIT for the Holy Spirit [of Promise] and yet Peter begins to officiate in a meeting of the brethren. To teach (as the Lord did) one sits down. To officiate one stands UP! Peter is in direct disobedience to the Lord who commanded the disciples to go to Jerusalem and WAIT [for the Promised] Holy Spirit (who didn't Advent (come) until a few days later as described in Acts 2. Peter is wholly operating in the flesh.

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Lk 24:49.

"tarry" [Strong's] Greek Word: καθίζω
Transliteration: kathizō
another (active) form for <G2516> (kathezomai); to seat down, i.e. set (figurative appoint); intransitive to sit (down); figurative to settle (hover, dwell).

Christ commands the disciples to SEAT DOWN but instead Peter STANDS UP!

First error. It's called "sin." To disobey the Lord it's called "sin."

And the Church has been paying for this sin ever since.

17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Acts 1:17.

"Numbered" [Strong's] Greek Word: καταριθμέω
Transliteration: katarithmeō
from <G2596> (kata) and <G705> (arithmeo); to reckon among.

This Greek word is the word "arithmetic" in English.

I'll come back to this later.

IF Peter is choosing an apostle to replace Judas, then here is his second error.

First, the ministry of apostle is a calling from God. He sets apostles in the Church, not man.

28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers,
1 Cor. 12:28.

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him
1 Cor. 12:18.

The ministry and calling and placement of apostle in the Body of Christ is done by God. Not men. The ministry of apostle is a spiritual office. And yet Peter for this spiritual office is giving a natural or physical qualification for this ministry. All one had to do to qualify is naturally and physically be witness of the beginning of Jesus' ministry from the baptism of John until Jesus' ascension. And also witness Jesus' resurrection [or to have seen Him after He resurrected.]
That is Peter's third error.

24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias;

"Ministry" [Strong's] Greek Word: διακονία
Transliteration: diakonia

from <G1249> (diakonos); attendance (as a servant, etc.); figurative (eleemosynary) aid, (official) service (especially of the Christian teacher, or technical of the diaconate):

If you notice this is where we get the English word "deacon." And if you don't know what it means it means to render service of a natural kind, who like the deacons in Acts 6 waited and served tables of the brethren. A natural function.

"Apostleship" [Strong's] #651
Greek Word: ἀποστολή
Transliteration: apostolē
from <G649> (apostello); commission, i.e. (special) apostolate

#649 is the word from which we get "apostle" proper (apostello).

Another thing is that giving of lots is a superstitious act that was performed in the Old Testament and was ordained for use by the High Priest. Peter had no authority to cast lots. It matters not that they prayed because without the Holy Spirit their prayer was without answer. Between the Ascension to the Advent of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost (=50) was a window of time about 10 days. Peter could not wait as His Lord and Master commanded.
This is Peter's fourth error.

"...and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." Acts 1:26.

Remember the word "numbered" in verse 17? This is a different word in Greek.

"Numbered" [Strong's] Greek Word: συγκαταψηφίζομαι
Transliteration: synkatapsēphizomai
Phonetic Pronunciation: soong-kat-aps-ay-fid’-zo
Root: from <G4862> and a compound of <G2596> and <G5585> (a three-word compound).
from <G4862> (sun) and a compound of <G2596> (kata) and <G5585> (psephizo); to count down in company with, i.e. enroll among.

Let's see where the first Greek word [arithmeo] shows up:

7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered [arithmeo]. Lk 12:7.

So, what does it mean? It means the counting of your hairs is a numbering among themselves. The word used for Matthias means to take a hair from someone else's head and add it to your head. The very hairs of our head are counted among themselves. Just as this word is used to describe Judas' ministry among the twelve apostles chosen by the Lord (Lk. 6:12-13).

But the word used by the Holy Spirit to identify the numbered with regard to Matthias means "with" or "[add] together" [Greek "syn"].
Two different Greek words translated "numbered." in the KJV.
The significance of these two words is that the Holy Spirit is telling us that Judas was counted "among" the twelve, but Matthias was counted "with" the eleven.

"...and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." Acts 1:26.

What I believe was going on here was Peter was not replacing Judas as apostle. If so then he has disobeyed His Lord and sinned a great sin that the Church is paying for today.
I think he was choosing a treasurer since Judas "held the bag" and that was his ministry. He was in possession of the treasury. Either way you want to see this Peter should have obeyed His Lord, sit down and shut up!
