John 18:38 Pilate saith unto Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, "I find in Him no fault at all.

  • That was truth! Pilate's question is interesting. What is truth? Paul tells us....

2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

  • There we are shown that those that perish don't perish because they don't have the truth, don't know the truth but...don't have LOVE OF the truth. They prefer their deception, they "had pleasure in unrighteousness."

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; Whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John 16:13 Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.

1 Corinthians 14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

  • The Holy Spirit is IN US, that is a truth! The Spirit guides us, those that love God and seek Him, "into all truth." Not others for, "the world cannot receive" or "knoweth Him." Does He give us all truth at once? No, the love of the truth but not all the truth....

[list:2t66krab]John 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

He feeds us what we can bear, can understand, as we study His Word. This is an awesome thing but it comes with a warning.....[/list:u:2t66krab]
Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

I found a passage I couldn't find yesterday....one I wanted to add to this thread:

  • Luke 12:42-43 And the LORD said, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

We are given deeper understanding of His Word as we can bear it and He knows when it is time, when it is "due season" for us to receive that knowledge.

Our Lord told Pilate the he had come to bear witness to the Truth.

Jesus told the woman at the well that the Father seeks for us to worship Him in Spirit and Truth.

Jesus, our Lord, told Nicodemus that the birth from heaven was of water and Spirit.

Truth is bound up with water and Spirit. The Truth as it is in Jesus.

First there must be the drinking of the blood of Jesus, as our Lord said that his blood was drink indeed.

What is truth?

And a great Apostle arose from the land of the Holly woods, and he replied...

Jesus answered Pilate's question...but not immediately. First Pilate decided to use a common custom that released someone at "Passover". The mob cried out to release Barabbas who was a robber. Then Pilate had Jesus scouraged and the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head and put a purple robe on Him, saying 'Hale King of the Jews'. Again Pilate says 'I find no fault in him'. After much commotion and crying out 'Crucify Him' the Pilate again says 'I find no fault in him'...

Shortly, Pilate asks Jesus where He was from...When Jesus made no response to the question Pilate says more....

  • John 19:10-11

10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. KJV

In John 19:11 Jesus - indirectly, answered Pilate's question - What is truth?

.... :amen .... :amen

You know Jeff.....I often think of that very line, right out of Nickolson's mouth, when some Biblical questions are asked. There are some truths that folks truly can't handle (and that could certainly include me). :(

It's OK, neither could the disciples. You're in good company if that's the case. ;) :D

Pilate's question is especially relevant today when people aren't just asking what is the truth in a specific situation, but is there such a thing as truth when it comes to the big realities. "Is there a God?" is a question many people nowadays like to answer by saying "I have my own view but if you believe something else that's fine for you." Ultimately this is nonsense, but it is how many people think.
