Redirecting Christmas From North Pole to Bethlehem

Lewis

Standing next to plastic figures of Mary, baby Jesus and Joseph, two ministers and three members of Congress took turns at a microphone this month to announce a new initiative called "Project Nativity."

"Our hope and prayer is that over the next three to four years, hundreds of nativity scenes will begin to dot the landscape of America once again," said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition. He said he hoped the temporary nativity scene on a terrace of the Capitol would serve as a "template" for similar efforts.

His project, which encourages Christians to seek permits for nativity scenes in front of public buildings, is just one example of multiple efforts to "take Christmas back." In recent years, there have been rumors of a "War on Christmas" and actual skirmishes over the use of the word in the public square and at the retail counter.

Now, some clergy and devout lay people are shunning secularism and church-state concerns and taking a more proactive stand to remind people of the Christ in Christmas or, as they like to say, "the reason for the season."

The initiatives stretch across the Atlantic to northern Ireland, where Catholic schoolteacher Kathleen Darragh wrote her own version of "12 Days of Christmas" that is being distributed by Illinois-based ACTA Publications.

Writing with her schoolchildren in mind, her poem begins: "On the first day of Christmas, our true God sent to us . . . Our Saviour Baby Jesus."

"The most excited talk they have is about Santa, and I sort of thought we have to get this idea across to them that Christmas is really about Christ and keeping the Christ in Christmas," she said in a telephone interview.

"People here and people in England are saying: 'Let's not go down the American route of having a Happy Holiday. Let's say . . . this is Happy Christmas. It's not Happy Holiday.' "

Stateside, some Santas have even focused on Jesus's birth.

Las Vegas hairdresser J.D. St. Ives plays the starring role in a new DVD called "Santa's Sing-A-Long!" that features carols as well as more secular Christmas songs. In the Magic Tree Inc. production, he asks his green-haired elves about the meaning of Christmas and they respond: "Toys! Games! Santa!"

"Ho! Ho! Ho! No. No. No," he responds before introducing "Silent Night." "Although all of those things are a part of the way we celebrate Christmas, that's not why we celebrate Christmas."

Since the 1980s, the "Kneeling Santa," a figure bowing down at the side of the infant Jesus, has grown from books to a range of merchandise. In the past few years, that brand has extended to a $200 outdoor figurine suitable for front lawns.

"People forget what the season is all about -- and children especially -- so it brings them back to what it's supposed to be and the true meaning of Christmas," said Velia Faso, director of special affairs for Addison, Ill.-based Roman Inc. Her company, which is the licensee for the "Kneeling Santa" line, plans to begin distributing a 4-foot silhouette image of the figure as "illuminated yard art" in 2007.

This year, some Christians are celebrating the focus on Jesus's birth on the big screen with the recent premiere of "The Nativity Story," just one way they hope to redirect Christmas away from the North Pole and back to Bethlehem.

"What I sense is it's raising the level of discussion about Christmas back to where it should be, instead of where it has been over the last two or three years, over whether we can say the word 'Christmas' in our greetings," said David Jeremiah, a pastor in El Cajon, Calif., who has written a companion book to the film.

In a move to further the movie's message, the same ministers that were encouraging permits for nativity scenes also supported plans to give each member of Congress a pair of free tickets to the film.

The Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council and the other minister at the Capitol news conference, said plans to verbally spread the message are under way as well.

"We just had a telephone conference call with religious leaders across the country who are encouraging their congregations to deliberately wish people a complete Merry Christmas," he said.

Their congregants are charged to say: "Merry Christmas, the joyous celebration of the birth of Christ."

why must there be such a push to indoctrinate and force beliefs upon others.

I don't know why the jews aren't always pushing to have menorahs displayed all over the place, or people aren't trying to put kwanza decorations everywhere, or anything else.

Why is Christianity the only religion that is trying to force itself upon everyone else?

I think it would be wonderful if you would answer that question for us. Why do you feel a need to push to indoctrinate and force your beliefs upon others?

Why is Christianity the only religion that is trying to force itself upon everyone else?
It is clear that you are trying to force your beliefs on others. You just do not consider your beliefs to be "religious".

So why do people accuse others of the very thing they are guilty of? Perhaps Frauds daughter Anne could answer that question for us.

In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes ("projects") to others, one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the ego recognize them. The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud. (Wikipedia)

I had the opportunity to speak with The Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney on the telephone about twenty years ago. He is so incredibly busy that I had to make a 'phone appt.' for something like 6:30 a.m. and was told that I would have the luxury of fifteen minutes of his time.

He is often taking on controversial things like the abortion issue or the Terry Schiavo case. Pray for him, for safety and protection as well as success and all that God calls him to.

I don't erect monuments in my yard that say "Jesus is a lie" I don't have a muper sticker that says "prayer, it's useless" I don't have a shirt that says "The bible is a lie" or anything like that. I don't go into schools and hand out anti-religion pamphlets. I don't go and say a pledge of allegience that denounces the existance of a God or Gods. I don't lead other children in open anti-christian chants, or pro atheist chants.

I don't think anyone here has been trying to indoctrinate me personally, as I don't think I have been trying to indoctrinate people to become atheist.

Not saying the word "God" or having a picture with Jesus in it, is not the equivilant of denying his existance.

Maybe you should move to a country where God has never been a part of their history. Atheists have never cried as much as they do today, nor did they cry and whine like they do today prior to the ole dead reprobate, Madalyn Murray O'Hair's founding of the American Atheists in the early 1960s. Prior to her role in the public arena, there was no national atheists whining about the Christianity displayed throughout the nation and in the public schools.

Believers know that this type of ignorance will be short-lived when Jesus returns, all of the unbelief will be cast away, and truth will reign forever. Atheists can have their short physical life of rejecting the truths of Jesus Christ, while believers grow towards a eternal life with the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords where proclaiming His glory will be omnipresent without one unbeliever around.

there wasn't much of a wine against segregation back in the 20's either. but.....

as more people become diffrent religions in the USA, and more people choose to be secular, agnostic, or atheist, more of those people are going to want those rights.

just as the irish wanted equal rights during the massive immigration periods.

It seems to me that it is the Christians that are cring "wah wah, we can't impose our views on people that don't want it imposed on them. wah, we can't use taxpayer money to indoctrinate people. wah!"

*note* a majotiy of Christians don't whine like that, only a handful of extremists, but they try to get the support of everyone they can,.

Well prior to the 60's people who did not believe in God might have got and in many cases a beat down. I am not saying that we should beat these people down. But that is the way it was during those times. And in the 17th and 18th century you would have got killed here in America for being a atheist.

The Bible says that those who say that there is no God are fools. I was at least able to recognize that the Bible might be right and I might be wrong, at the time that I was an unbeliever.

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. Psalm 14:1

A free for all! Everyone do what is right in their own eyes.
Tolerate those who believe the exact opposite of what you believe.
Wait a minute. Gee.. in that kind of a nation, should not atheist silently tolerate while Christians Praise the Lord Jesus Christ, and lead others into truth?

I think most Christians know that if you do not want to spend eternity with God, you don't have to. We simply want to make sure you know that it comes at a high price.

I think that perhaps we would like to see our tax money not being used to fund ungodliness and stupid stuff. We need God in the government. We do not need the government in the Church.

Using tax money for good rather than evil? What a great idea!

i don't see how spending millions of dollars on statues and plaques to commemorate Jesus or Christian Holidays, is better than spending that money on education, health, etc.

I bet God would rather have marble statues and objects made for him, than have his people help eachother with their time and money. :-?

the "your a fool if you don't believe the bible" is an implicit deny statement. It is basically a cover all for being challenged.

and lewis, I definately agree. Being an atheist back in the 50's and before would probably lead to abeating and imprisonment for being a Nazi, or a Commie, or even a witch.

Without a doubt. You would have had to be very underground with it. On the DL= On the down low.

haha ya. most religous groups at one point face religous discrimination and physical violence for their beliefs. I know Christians have also had some.

Let me help you out with your comprehension challenge by reposting my post so that you can see that nowhere have I posted that you are a fool for not believing the Bible. Your continual misrepresentations must basically be a cover for being challenged.

If I don't believe the bible, I obviously do not accept God (at least not in the way the Christians here proclaim)

Then by that remark, you consider yourself to be your own absolute authority, and by that standard, you stand upon everything that you believe and by it everything should be judged; therefore, you have decided that you will be judged by your own standard, and not any ole god's standard since god and his judgments are based upon that which you determine to be right.

Maybe apt?

Symbols of Christmas: Holly

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was
crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that
brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds
we are healed. (NIV) Isaiah 53:5

Christmas is full of symbols. Holly, the Christmas
evergreen plant, originally reminded people that some
forms of life continued through the winter, while most
of nature appeared to have gone to sleep or was
dead. The holly's white flower has been interpreted
as the purity of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The
plant's prickly leaves were thought to represent the
crown of thorns placed on Jesus' head when he was
crucified. And its red berries reminded people of the
drops of blood He shed on the cross and the promise
of new life to come when he rose from the dead.

All of us who have a relationship with Jesus Christ
have the promise of new life, life eternal. . . so enjoy
today. . . enjoy every moment knowing that God
loved you enough to send His Son to die for you!
