The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Washington Redskins’ trademark registration on Wednesday, a move that won’t force the NFL team to change its name but fuels the intense fight by opponents to eliminate what they view as a racial slur against Native Americans.
Full story in Washington Post

The Redskins logo is a "racial slur"? Seriously? I think it's one of the more respectful logos I've seen. Compare the Redskins logo with the cap insignia of the Cleveland Indians.

Which one is more respectful? And what about other groups? My ancestors were Vikings. Can I sue the Minnesota Vikings for this...

If you watch the second video in the article, you'll see at the end of it that they also object to the name "Redskins". Then what about team names like "Braves" or "Indians"? Will those have to be changed? And if "Redskins" is disparaging, then what about "Oklahoma", which means "Read People"? Where will it end?

the American Indians as a whole don't care. my wife, nor her side that are Indians have no care about that issue. if one wants to go there. change Washington d.c back to its original name which is Takoma. after all that was an indian village.

On a personal level. each individual determines what offends him or her. But we can't base legal decisions (such as what trademarks are allowed) on the feelings or opinions of individuals. If we did, practically nothing would be allowed, since some people are so easily offended that pretty much everything offends somebody. In cases like this, we have to use common sense and look a the intent behind the thing being discussed (in this case the Redskins logo). The logo isn't a caricature that shows Indians in a disparaging way, but a picture of a strong man who is proud of who he is. The term "redskins" might be a little more debatable, but I've never thought of it as a slur. And like I said, if "redskins" is a slur, then what about "Oklahoma"? The name means "red people" and has been the name of the state for over 100 years without anyone objecting to it.

According to this article, a poll in 2005 showed that "90 percent of Native Americans were not offended by the franchise’s name".

I believe Oklahoma is a Choctaw word.

Oklahoma also was the home to the Choctaw. so how is that not offensive to them? its not they named themselves that.

the Seminole tribe gave a big thumbs up when fsu choose that as their name for their team.

Every American Indian i know is a Raider fan ...

Yes i agree it should be the consensus of the group that determines if something is offensive. I'm not really worried about pulling up every other thing that might be considered offensive unless those offended mention it.

Ah now that's interesting because our news here only showed a clip of how NA's are offended. Have you spoken to many Indians to get their view ? ( ops is Indians ok ? )

In all my life I've only met 2 American Indians. One was a kid that lived next door when I was about 7 or 8, and the other was in my gym class when I was in 10th grade. I don't remember either of them ever saying that being called "Indian" offended them, and I don't remember having heard them say they were offended by anything else in particular. Of course, the term "Indian" is only used for the native Americans because Columbus didn't know where he was. "Native Americans" is more accurate, but I've never seen "Indian" as offensive, just inaccurate.

Here we have Aborigines or Indigenous Australians. Most of us assume we know them but in reality not many of us ( white Australians ) know what Aborigines think about the way we address them. In different States there's a different respectful title with Koori being the respectful title used for NSW and VIC Aborigine. Basically we ( white Australians ) don't understand very well how to interact with the people whose land we conquered and we're slowly learning from them how they would prefer to be addressed. Something like Romans 14 imo.
