Removing search/word memory...

Hey y'all.

I run Windows XP here and I am wondering how do you get rid of the search/word memory from your browser?

For example when I type in the word 'how' in my search engine, it automatically would put in 'how to clean your carpet' that I had searched for 4 or 5 days ago. Also even in this forum, certain words I begin to type into the subject line produce other words I've used before.

Clearing the history and removing cookies doesn't get rid of it.

Any ideas?

Which browser are you using?
I ask because you need to clear your cache files. In firefox it's listed under Edit--->Preferences-->Privacy-->Cache. (sorry that's for linux)
in Windows it's Tools--->Options--->Privacy--->Cache
I'm not sure where it is for IE. I'm sure someone will come along with an answer:D

Just be careful of what you are removing...Sometimes the things we search on the internet aren't good for us anyway.

I doubt if those problems will occur on this site though :D

I'm using Windows Internet Explorer. I don't have Cache in my Privacy section. In the General section there is an option to delete Cookies and Temporary internet files but no cache.

Ok, then here's the instructions for IE

The Temporary Internet Files (or cache) folder contains Web page content that is stored on your hard disk for quick viewing. This cache permits Internet Explorer or MSN Explorer to download only the content that has changed since you last viewed a Web page, instead of downloading all the content for a page every time it is displayed. To delete the files in the Temporary Internet Files folder, follow these steps:.
1. Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

Nope. Still didn't work. Key words from previous searches come up in the Search the Web bar.

Turn "auto complete" off.

If your concerned about the "Address bar" history......turn it off.

Hey smidgen,

I believe I already did the Auto Complete thing and it didn't work. It merely worked for the automatic fill-ins for user names and what not on certain web pages.

It just doesn't seem to clear the search words I have used in the past.

I will give it another shot, though.

Ok, then now we get down into the down and dirty.
You need to clean your index.dat file. There is a post here called "Index.dat" and you by smigen. it provides a link about the index.dat file. Also here is another one

There should be free programs available for cleaning index.dat, but it can also be done manually. I'm not sure how as I use linux/firefox but the info should be available on the net.
