Rock

The 'rock' (small 'r') is the solid truth that Peter has just uttered in verse 16, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”, that Jesus was responding to with a declaration that He was going to build His Church upon it.

Peter hit a homerun with that statement, but he struck out the next time he opened his mouth.

Yup.

The Holy Spirit has a great sense of humor...

I really like this part of Scripture. The Holy Spirit uses our sense of humor, our ability to laugh at ourselves.

We see Jesus, the Teacher. We see his students.

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

The look on their faces must have been priceless. Can you imagine?

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, [It is] because we have taken no bread. ...

There we have it. "Brilliant!" Yep, that must be it, we forgot to bring bread. We know Jesus to be somewhat mysterious in his sayings. I get it, he's being gentle with us, reminding us that we should have brought bread.

Jesus has the patience of a saint (lol). Do you think he prayed before he continued to teach?

[Which] when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not understand that I spake [it] not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

Then understood they how that he bade [them] not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

After sufficient time passed for that to sink in their Christ continued to teach.

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

We know that one caught their attention. Peter answered correctly (as did Alabaster). The disciples must have thought about it. Considered the truth of what they heard.

Later...

... And immediately Jesus stretched forth [his] hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
[Matthew 14:31-33 KJV]

I still like that part. They asked the Bread of Life Himself, "Is it because we forgot to bring the bread?"

It's so funny and classic! What a human thing to say!

Peter can be so funny. I have been a Peter many times with the Lord. Remember his "Lord! It is great for us to be here, we will build a temple for you, and..."

:lol

I was looking more for why the catholic view on the rock is wrong. But I thought that this kind of discussion was not allowed in this section of the forum...

Q: "What do you call a shoe store with only one owner?"
A: "A sole proprietorship."

Word play is common in the Scriptures.

One could argue that my little riddle means more than what I intended.
:chin Perhaps I'm against corporations? Maybe I don't like business partnerships?
