There's a song called "They'll know we are Christians by our love"

It goes:

"We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored,
And they'll know we are Christians by our love..."

Then says

"We'll guard each man's dignity

And save each man's pride."

We're gonna save the root of rebellion?

Lol, no.

We used to sing this song many years ago in a fellowship I was a part of. I took note of this verse, too, and it helps me remember to not humiliate people. The key word there is 'dignity'.

How does the former justify the latter?
I believe it's being poetic.

The line with 'pride' in it is a just another way of saying the line with 'dignity' in it.

Pride is not always a negative thing. Pride, like in 'arrogance' is a bad thing. Pride, like taking pride in your kid's accomplishments is a good thing.
