18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.

Jesus was pointing out how He, the Word made flesh, was of God and was God.
Of course those folks didn't know it, but we can see it clearly in the bible.

I feel Jesus was merely trying to get the man to recognize who he was talking to. Sorta like "Who do you say that I am?"
