The American Psychological Association says that this election is a major life stressor for half of all Americans. They have identified what they’re calling “Election Stress Disorder” and they’re providing coping tips for people. Yes, it’s been an ugly campaign season with a lot of surprises. Yes, both candidates need God’s help. Yes, this is a critical election and a lot is at stake—namely the Supreme Court. There’s no question that Christians need to pray, to be involved, and to vote even in a tough election. But I can give you a “coping tip.” There’s a place that you can find help, and hope, that the world can’t give—that is in God’s Holy Word. The Bible tells us that ultimately “God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne” (Psalm 47:8). I am praying for God to give us a president, a vice president, and other leaders in this country who will acknowledge Him and look to Him for direction. But no matter who is in the Oval Office, God is still on His throne. My hope is in Him. He is what our country needs. “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you” (Psalm 39:7).
I wish I'd understood this about 50 years ago. I thought I could save myself. I was wrong. I listened to people who told me I could find the answers to all of life's mysteries within myself. They were wrong. I shudder when I think I could have died before understanding the Lord's message of salvation. Where would I have been then? Thank you, Lord.
