The best thing to do is to find out what plants are native to your area, AND, when you plan your garden, figure out how much sun and how much shade the garden area gets.
Figure out how much water the plants will need, don't plant water loving plants right next to
plants that tolerate drought well, you'll kill one of them.
Also, say, your soil is mostly sandy, well, plant flowers that thrive in desert like conditions.
