Matthew Five:1-12

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes
He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Love, Walter and Debbie

Hello Jeff, Did I get your name right? if not then can I get it again, I thought I wrote it somewhere, but I must put it in my folder this time, and thank you for the response to the Beatitudes.

Love always, Walter and Debbie
Yes, my name is Jeff. Thank you for remembering.

For some reason, I seem to highlight verse 6 as well. I did a study on Gods righteousness some time ago and found Jesus unpacks this in verse 40 which points back to Deuteronomy 24:10-13. All Jewish Rabbis understand this coronation and they have some very good things to say on the matter.

First, we see that when a person is held accountable for their debts, there has to be a measure of mercy present. Mercy can always be found in righteousness otherwise we would be shamed. Why? Because a cloak would be the only thing that kept a person warm at night and giving it back every night ensured they had something warm to sleep in. In other words, there are basic human needs that should always be met, like food and warmth. However, accountability is also demanded.

This idea plays out in so many situations, and I’m thinking about the many times we held our own children accountable for their actions. We never punished for the pleasure of watching them suffer. Instead, we disciplined in a way that caused them to grow in a responsible manner. Mercy was always part of raising them coupled with accountability.

Just out of curiosity, why did you highlight verse 6?

For some reason, when I received grace this morning I was trying to remember what the Lord was saying the first thing was thirst or hunger, then I had to search for that scripture: Matthew Six:6
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
