I was a Clinical Trial Assistant trained in Biomedical Lab Technique (97 avg in Biochem) for well over a decade and worked for some of the most famous Big Pharma and Biotech firms...and my niece Robin was one of the Geneticists working for the Human Genome Project at the time of its completion here at Whitehead Institute. We always talk and debate…

So my Peeps! I love you all, but you must see into the language of persuasion. First off the 1.8% difference propaganda regarding the similarity between human and chimp is just that. It is propaganda! It is actually more like 5% (National Geographic claims 4% but close enough to show the smaller number to be propaganda) and most scientists agree.

In the limited sections exploring the limited aspects of the genome that they used to derive these dwarfed figures it is understood by their PR people that the common person does not understand and thus will be persuaded by the appeal to authority fallacy and by faith in statistics (see How to Lie with Statistics,by Darrell Huff…a must read for most statisticians in today’s Universities).

ENLIGHTENMENT!!! A complete genome comparison of human and chimp DNA HAS BEVER BEEN DONE (period)! They give you such an impression because they KNOW you DO NOT know, and that’s the only reason.

Now then, when speaking of the “Genome” we are speaking of much more than just the recorded sequencing of DNA in a given or comparative species (which again has never actually been done). But without going off into all that (and there is much) when we take the Chimp vs. Human “differences” as slight as 5 % may sound, that difference is HUGE.

About 67% of the DNA of all species categorized as “Primate” is the identical but this just translates into our having blood vessels, skin, a heart pump a brain and so on. This does not mean one came from the other no matter how you spin it….but that this means we are all in that category and nothing else. Via this section we all are mammals, with hair, and genitalia, and so on (that’s all). The approximated 5% difference exists only in the other 33% which means we have an actual difference of about 1/6th of what makes us human as opposed to chimp, and that number of differences in the base pairs is in the millions.

The Human Haploid Genome contains around 3 BILLION base pairs. Now take away the 2,010,000,000 same pairs (the 67%) and that leaves 990,000,000 of which 1/6th means there are 165,000,000 differences in the base pairs between humans and chimps.

WOW! That’s HUGE…it’s like the difference between algebra and calculus…the amount of information encoded in over 160 MILLION base pairs is unfathomable and more than a whole think tank of Genius level scientists could ever contain in 10 lifetimes. Now compare such a think tank to the knowledge held by any general group of common persons in 10 lifetimes. See the difference?

Now this is true, and what I want you to see is how when we look at statistics of the very same genomic portrait from a different prospective area of approach what a different picture we get. That’s number one.

Secondly, Evolutionary Biologists love to ignore or neglect the 2nd law of genetics when media-presenting their persuasions. The second law tells us (this is a demonstrable, observable, test confirmed reality) that recessive traits (such as ape-kind if they indeed were our ancestors) not only repeat themselves in future generations BUT on occasion actually revert and we see examples in the species (of plant or animal) when the qualities and characteristics or the recessive type TAKE OVER and re-present themselves.

So if this premise were true, then Ape-like Sapiens and Sapiens with distinctly Ape-like (or chimp like, or banana like) qualities would have been reappearing all through humanoid history. But alas this has never been the case.

Thirdly, the EBs never make the case for common genetic evolution form Chimp kind but from Ape kind (australopithicene) and the actual known differences are even much greater.

Actually, the first direct comparison of human/chimpanzee DN was done rather early with DNA hybridization decades ago.

Evaluation of the maximum likelihood estimate of the evolutionary tree topologies from DNA sequence data, and the branching order in hominoidea

A maximum likelihood method for inferring evolutionary trees from DNA sequence data was developed by Felsenstein (1981). In evaluating the extent to which the maximum likelihood tree is a significantly better representation of the true tree, it is important to estimate the variance of the difference between log likelihood of different tree topologies. Bootstrap resampling can be used for this purpose (Hasegawa et al. 1988; Hasegawa and Kishino 1989), but it imposes a great computation burden. To overcome this difficulty, we developed a new method for estimating the variance by expressing it explicitly.

The method was applied to DNA sequence data from primates in order to evaluate the maximum likelihood branching order among Hominoidea. It was shown that, although the orangutan is convincingly placed as an outgroup of a human and African apes clade, the branching order among human, chimpanzee, and gorilla cannot be determined confidently from the DNA sequence data presently available when the evolutionary rate constancy is not assumed.

Lots of these, but hybridization is a fairly rough method. It was clear that chimps are our closest relatives, but the details were still not known.

By 2005, the genomes were known, and comparable:

WASHINGTON, Wed., Aug. 31, 2005 — The first comprehensive comparison of the genetic blueprints of humans and chimpanzees shows our closest living relatives share perfect identity with 96 percent of our DNA sequence, an international research consortium reported today.
In a paper published in the Sept. 1 issue of the journal Nature, the Chimpanzee Sequencing and Analysis Consortium, which is supported in part by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), describes its landmark analysis comparing the genome of the chimp (Pan troglodytes) with that of human (Homo sapiens).

"The sequencing of the chimp genome is a historic achievement that is destined to lead to many more exciting discoveries with implications for human health," said NHGRI Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. "As we build upon the foundation laid by the Human Genome Project, it's become clear that comparing the human genome with the genomes of other organisms is an enormously powerful tool for understanding our own biology."

No. It's not magic. Mendel showed that inheritance is not like mixing paint but like sorting beads. Recessive traits only exist so long as they exist in the population. But alleles often disappear from populations, particularly at bottlenecks or small populations from which new species tend to appear. Fixation also removes genes. Once they are gone, they are extremely unlikely to reappear by mutation. The mathematics of these processes are well-understood, and fit the observed evidence.

Reread my post. I said "A complete genome comparison of human and chimp DNA HAS BEVER BEEN DONE"! The Journal of Molecular Evolution articles from 1984 and 1989 were filled with speculation as the complete Human Genome was not even sequenced until 2001, and the "complete" Chimp genome has not even been finished yet. You can read a draft version (thus a "best guess") in the September 2005 edition of Nature and we are getting closer but it has not been done....

DNA hybridization does use the complete genomes. But until human and chimp genomes were completely sequenced, we couldn't do a gene-by-gene analysis. Now that we have done that, it turns out that humans and chimps are somewhat more similar than we had previously suspected.

Francis Collins is, BTW, a devout evangelical Christian, who sees no conflict between God what He has shown us in His creation.

You'd have to rewrite Gods word to make man and beast compatible..

165 million differences? So we're talking about two different species then, obviously lol.

but we knew that.

Yes! DNA only describes and determines physicality and we are so very much more....
