John 13
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
13 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”

7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”

8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

{ 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.}

how do you the posters feel about foot washing in Church. when Jesus wrapped the towel around his waste to wash feet.the towel became a servants badge. does your Church practice foot washing? do you the poster believe in it? have you ever done it.
personally i believe it should be practiced in the Church. not in the spirit of ceremony but in the spirit of humility . i have been in some spiritual foot washing services. then i been in some just a ceremony.

Jesus left a command 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. if a person is not comfortable doing it then i suggest you at least watch. . your not taking soap and water and doing foot cleaning . many Churches today who once practiced foot washing no longer do so

what are your thoughts i realize there are some denoms who refuse to practice it

We use to do of the above, but however, we are not now because as we observe the scriptures closely as in the above, but, it is not a commandment, and we are not against others that still practice this service.

I think its fine to do, but Christ said it was an 'example'.

The word "example" was representation, a figure, a copy. It was an imitation that He wanted them to be servants one to another. This is what was one of the things that was meant to set them apart form the religions of that day.

The religions of that day had hierarchy. Jesus, being very God in flesh, rightful in every way to never bow down before someone - much less wash their feet - used this as an 'example' to show them how they should behave.

We see this very short lived, although, I think among true disciples of Christ this servant attitude is still present. Actually, it has to be present - the word used, hypodeigma, actually has the connotation of a pattern or example of what true believers will do, not just should do.

i don,t see it as a ordinance in the church but he did say to do it If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. if done in the right spirit it can be humbling . but if looked at like just foot washing then it should not be done

then one could say Communion is the same thing we do in remembrance of him.. i take communion and support it %100

honestly we are getting to the point of rewriting the Bible . i heard the other day Goliath was not 9ft tall but only 6 feet. since some one had studied it out . next we will take john 3:3 out maybe romans 10:9-10 .foot washing is symbolic and real with being humble .is it the only way? NO but a practice the Church has got away from.

Yes, communion is the same.

I'm just saying, based on the words used, it wasn't about washing the feet, it was about being humble and a servant.

I dont know how Jesus done it. Foot washing is the lowest of low. I mean, think of all there feet 2000 years ago. Rank.

Im sure Jesus done everything to prove only he can do everything and no man can live up to his service. Well the Pope washes peoples feet and even kiss there feet, but that's once a year and everythings always a stage show for all to see so he looks holy, he doesn't do his alms in secret.

the washing of the feet was a servants job . he left the example for us to follow but to each there own

jesus took water and a towel and washed feet . while i am not big fan of the office of the pope how do you know he does it for show?

Because if it wasn't for show I wouldnt know anything about it at the bottom of the world.

No, I never washed feet in a church service. I will just accept I cannot be like Jesus and give him all the credit. I dont think I can be like Jesus, most probably impossible.

you sell your self short...

you sell your self short...

Washing feet is only the start. Its good but not yet perfect, remember the rich man held the commandments. Jesus gave many examples. How to be perfect.

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
