rom 8:
8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
The word of God should be believed ! But many today who profess a reverence for God's Truth, actually display a disdain to it.
This Truth of rom 8:8 carries with it some serious implications, one of which is this, Those who have not been born again, can never Have Faith in the True God, nor the True Christ of God.
And this Truth is very confirming of regeneration or new birth before Faith.
To have Faith in Christ one must already be born again !
Who are they that are in the flesh ? Simple, all who come into this world by natural childbirth .
Jesus says Jn 3:
6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
You and I by nature are flesh, and cannot be nothing but in the flesh..
Now get this, God says this, and God means this "they that are in the flesh cannot please God."
I do not care how religious one maybe, if they are not born again, they cannot please God.
The word cannot are the greek words :
ou= which means:
no, not;
And the word
dynamai= which means:
to be able, have power whether by virtue of one's own ability and resources, or of a state of mind, or through favourable circumstances, or by permission of law or custom
to be able to do something
to be capable, strong and powerful
So, God teaches that all those in the flesh, born by natural birth, has no ability, no state of mind, no power, not capable of pleasing Him..
The word please in rom 8:8 is the greek word
areskō= which means:
to please
2) to strive to please
The word is found in 1 thess 4:
1Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
It signifies:
"to be pleasing to, be acceptable to : for example it is said of Enoch:
gen 5:
22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters
The septuagint reads:
And Enoch was well-pleasing to God after his begetting Mathusala, two hundred years, and he begot
Hebrews 11 :
5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
That should give us a hint, that Enoch was more than just a man born by natural childbirth, but a man born again..
One of the definitions above means to strive to please. Men who are merely born of the flesh, cannot strive to please God.
So when Jesus says this:
lk 13:
24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
This could not apply to people who are merely flesh, born of a women and thats all.
And of course, those who are in the flesh cannot possibly have Faith, that Faith described in Heb 11:
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2For by it the elders obtained a good report
6But without faith it is impossible to please him:
Without Faith it is impossible to please Him, which of course implies that with Faith it is possible to please Him, which cannot be done by those in the flesh, who never been born again.
Now, is believing on Christ well pleasing to God ? Why certainly, God commands it per 1 jn 3:
22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
Now, ask yourself in light of the foregoing, can one who is born merely and only of the Flesh, of a women, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, which is a commandment of God, and one of things indicated as well pleasing in His sight ?
8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
