Topic #5 . . . Is "omnipotent" actually so?

It has been said that "god is omnipotent". He has all the power. Does that mean that I have none? Does that mean that I have no power of my own to make decisions, including my own actions?

All of creation has been empowered by God and is packed full of creative energy, even you have been empowered by God.

Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

You see, God creates the earth, but he empowers the earth to bring forth...

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

and he does the same with the waters, with the animals and with us, which are created in His image.

It's a beautiful story... we start in a garden, but end in a city. Creation is moving forward.

If he gives some of his power away to us, then he can't still be omnipotent, right?

Good question Deavonreye,
Hopefully you will find your answer within the below questions.
What takes more power. To slap somebody, or to be slapped by somebody inferior to you and you just stand there and take it?

Why is it that we humans feel so much more empowered when we're the ones doing the slapping?

I would like to know your view on this.

Thanks.

Stovebolts, . . . I'm not sure if your analogy can apply. Two individuals can have varying amounts of power, yet power [between two humans] doesn't dictate who is getting slapped at any specific time. On the other hand, if someone is omnipotent, they have all the power. That would logically conclude that anyone that actually DOES have power, it was appointed to them by god for a specific purpose.

Omnipotence means "all powerful," not "has all the power."

Omnipotence means "all powerful," not "has all the power."

I think it would have to. If I have power, then it is power that god would not have. Thus, he could be ALL powerful. He would just be MOST powerful.

You didn't understand what I stated. Omnipotence and whether or not one has "all the power" are two different ideas. You and I having power has nothing to do with God's omnipotence.

No, I understood what you stated, I just have a differing opinion on what it means to be "omnipotent".

As a side note, . . . if you're omnipresent, . . . . . what if you wanted leave a place you were at? :chin:D

Ok, so call me slow.. I don't get it. Where does "dictate who is getting slapped at any specific time" fit in this?

Nobody is omnipotent except God, and as scriptures state, he has empowered his creation. But as Free stated, it's not about having All the Power. Like scripture states, God empowered his Creation.

I just saw what you posted to Free. If your opinion is that 2 + 2 = 5, then we're clearly not on the same page. Heaven forbid we speak on multiplication or long division. :lol

Can we agree on this from Dictionary.com?

omnipotent

adjective
1. almighty or infinite in power, as God.

2. having very great or unlimited authority or power.

noun
3. an omnipotent being.

4. the Omnipotent, God.

I don't see an entry for one having All the power.

Hmmm.....so I'm being laughed at. . . . . Okay.
He wasn't laughing at you, for the most part. ;) He made a funny. :) His point, and mine, is that you are redefining omnipotence. If you want to argue against God's omnipotence, then you must do so from the actual, widely accepted definition, otherwise this discussion is pointless.

Deavonreye,

My laugh was not an attempt to belittle you and I apologize if I made you feel that way. I was hoping you would laugh with me.

I'm a light hearted guy and I don't take things too seriously at times and as a result, I'm afraid I must have stepped on your toes. For that, I'm sorry and I will try to watch my sense of humor more closely with you, and keep my silly laughter to myself.

Anyway, and I think you would agree, it doesn't matter what subject or topic we're speaking on from politics, religion or putting a desk together. Nomenclature is important not only for properly understanding a subject, but also for properly correcting any types of misunderstandings.

So, if you bowed out because of my laughter, sorry, I won't do that again and I would encourage you to engage in this conversation further, but to do so, we need to be on the same page when it comes to what certain words actually mean.

Grace and Peace.

Don't worry about it. You're a good guy.

Anyway, I misunderstood a concept, so chose to bow out because of that.

That reminds me of that old joke, the trouble with being omnipresent is, you have to sit through a lot of boring prayer meetings!
