On another thread, friend Ryan and I were discussing the role of the law.

We both seemed to think that it might be appropriate to start another thread since we had seemed to stray somewhat from the topic of the other thread.

Anyway, I do like Augustus Toplady's hymn, which says:

'The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do;
My Savior’s obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view.'

Toplady was a strong Calvinist, yet he didn't seem to be wanting to put people back under the law.

Paul to the Romans says that it's grace that reigns through righteousness (Romans 5.21). Sinclair B Ferguson, who, again, has a reputation as a strong Calvinist, makes much of this precious act in one of his books.

Being a Calvinist has nothing to do with trying to put people back under the law, that various from denomination to denomination and person to person and some of the denominations that want us to follow the law may be Calvinists but that does not mean most Calvinists are this way. I am a reformed baptist, which along with a lot of other things means I am also a Calvinist. Reformed baptists don't believe we are under the law though.

Rachel: Yes, I understand this. I think if you look at the currently live tattoo thread, where Ryan, questdriven and I have some discussions of theological issues which went off-topic (necessitating this new thread!), you will see the context of some of my comments in response to Ryan, who seems to take a stronger, legal line (for the want of a better phrase).

Blessings.

Yes, I see what you mean. I just wanted to point out that if someone believes we should still be under the law has nothing to do with Calvinism because there are many false assumptions made about Calvinism. If you are interested in learning more about Calvinism (and seeing all the Biblical support of it) a friend sent these sermons to me awhile back and they were really good: part one, part two, part three, part four, part five.

Rachel: Yes, thank-you; I'm myself into the Five Points and have been convinced of their Biblical basis for many years, as it happens; but what our friend was saying on the tattoo thread was kind of different, or so it seemed to me (if you read it, you'll see).

Blessings.
