Touch me not ?

That has made me wonder for the past 34 years.

I have heard a few explanations - I found all of them lacking.

17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Seems to me Jesus answered the question ... He had not yet ascended

how does this explain it - as Pizza says this is just another explanation that really does not explain it but thank you for trying - twinc

Touch me not can be translated "do not hold on to me".
He still had things to do, places to go before he went to heaven.
Not so difficult.

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

See, this gets to me - was it that she was a SHE? Did he ascend then come back in verse 26/27 - then ascend a second time when all saw him go away?

This one really gets me.

Excellent post, but that avatar has GOT to GO!

And if He did (and I do think you are right) it leaves me wondering why.
I'm sure it's some spiritual thing that is over my head...

Not over your head. He was the Passover lamb sacrificed and offered up as the Firstfruits of the harvest.
I believe because....
He was the Firstfruits of the Resurrection. When He ascended was at the same time the Firstfruits offering would be lifted up as it says in the OT. The wave sheaf offering or omar of barley. On the first day of the week during Passover week.

In other words, "Don't delay either me or yourself, but get on down the road to bring the news to my disciples." ?

why did Jesus say this at Jn.20 : 17 - twinc
What the Lord was saying is "Do not detain me now", since He was to first ascend to the heavenly Sanctuary -- the Holy Place -- as our Great High Priest and "by His own blood He entered in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us" (Heb 9:12). We are not told at what point He ascended with the souls and spirits of the OT saints, but that could also have happened then (Eph 4:8-10).

Also, Mary needed to learn that she could not (just as Paul could not) "know Christ after the flesh" (in His original humanity) any longer. That she was to be a messenger for the Risen Lord at this point. We seem to forget that absolutely none of Christ's disciples actually anticipated His resurrection, Mary included. They were prepared to embalm Him and leave Him in His tomb.
