With Valentine's Day coming up, I wanted to let anyone know who needs to know: Valentine's Day isn't worth shedding a tear over.
I know some people really enjoy it as a commercial holiday - tailored to "sweethearts" and "romance" - and even in churches, there are "Sweetheart Banquets" and events that pair couples up - and alienate those who are not in a relationship.
There are various histories of Saint Valentine, none of them very clear - but it is clear that today, the name has been used to promote "romance" for the sake of retail sales. If I owned a Hallmark store, I'd be excited. ;) But I spent my teen years with a single mom in the church, and I've witnessed the fact that Valentine's Day can be a very painful holiday for many.
If Valentine's Day is supposed to be about love, a thoughtful note and/or gift as a pick-me-up may be needed and appreciated most by someone who is not your "sweetheart" - maybe just a friend in need. And it can be a very important recourse for people susceptible to feeling brokenhearted; giving to others is the best way to realize healing.
