FUZHOU CITY CHINA
This Week's Prayer Guide - This week, pray for the needs of the people of Fuzhou. Pray for the church to be a Christlike witness to their friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members. You realize that the economy is now in a terrible state,” says one Fuzhou pastor. “Everyone is in a rat race, and the first thing is the pressure to survive. We basically don’t spend money if we don’t have to. The other day when we were moving, my wife and I said that we won’t buy any new clothes for the next few years because our old ones are enough, unless they wear out. So you can see that this pressure to survive is very, very great.” Pray for the economy in Fuzhou to improve, and for God to provide for his people and help give them peace in the midst of this financial pressure. As a result of the poor economy and the “rat race” culture, one pastor shares that most young people in Fuzhou have their time completely taken up. “Just last night, two of our members said they got off work at 10:45 and 10:30 PM, and another one said they were still in a meeting. You’ll find that even though some of them are department heads, the world has basically taken over their time. They are still very zealous in their faith, but they just have no time.” Pray for an easing of this “rat race” culture, and for people to have more time. Another effect of this economic pressure is the increasing number of singles in the church. One Fuzhou pastor shares, “Our church is not large, but we have over a dozen single brothers and sisters. They don’t want to get married. They feel there is no future in marriage and see no need to enter into it. Some are so busy they have no time for relationships. This time has been squeezed out.” Pray for a healthier life for these busy individuals, that their singleness can be used to God’s glory, or, if it is God’s will, that he will bring them spouses with whom they can follow Christ together. “In recent years,” says one Fuzhou pastor, “it’s been very obvious that many young people are renting and then leaving. They can’t survive here in Fuzhou, so they terminate their leases and go back to their hometowns. The employment rate is indeed not very good.” Pray for more opportunities for students and young people to put down roots in Fuzhou. There seem to be more and more people with mental illnesses,” shares one Fuzhou pastor, “more people with depression.” Another pastor agrees: “More and more people are depressed, both children and adults. For children, it’s often because of playing games on their phones. I know many children around me who have stopped going to school, even in the families of pastors and fellow church members. It’s quite heartbreaking.” Pray for the God of all comfort to soothe the anxiety and depression of these people, that he will be with them in their heartbreak and give them Christ’s peace. - A pastor in Fuzhou shares, “In the past five years, our university student ministry has almost disappeared. Before the pandemic, we still had a student ministry. There was a time when we went to the university every week to share the gospel. But after the pandemic, we couldn’t get into the universities. Even now, it’s very difficult to get in; you have to have your face scanned or use a card.” Pray for more opportunities for churches in Fuzhou to love, care for, and share the gospel with students. |
