He may have brought it up because some of us fast on the Day of Atonement, coming up this Sabbath (October 4).

Actually I was unaware of that. However, is this appropriate for a Christian to celebrate considering that scripture says that those who go to the law are blinded (2 Cor 3:14)? Messianic Judaism intrigues me, and I understand that a lot of them aren't necessarily judaizers, but merely people who believe that you can't be saved by works, but by faith alone and uphold eternal security. I think it would be interesting to observe the Jewish holidays. I just feel leery of going that way sometimes.

It's not very spiritual. If I fast I'm supposed to relinquish food (or whatever else I fast from) happily, right? But my stomach isn't the most spiritually driven part of my body and thus I I would of course crave food when fasting.
It's not a bad thing I guess, because we are biologically wired to seek for food, and for a reason so. But it's also the typical flesh being stronger than the spirit thing.

...... I think it would be interesting to observe the Jewish holidays. I just feel leery of going that way sometimes.

A lot feel that way, thinking that by doing so they are going back to works.

But let's look at it this way. Does one worry about other holidays like Christmas? They don't mind celebrating it because they think they are not doing it for salvation. And that is true.

So.... look at the feasts of the Lord the same way. Nobody is saying you are saved by observing them. But if we are to keep anything, I'd rather that than something out of paganism. The awareness of the feasts of the Lord is the first step to understanding his redemptive plan for mankind, with all of prophecy.
