Simply defined, it is unmerited favor but there is much meaning to that.

Without grace, there's no possibility of being saved. Even on our best days, we need the grace of God. We can't get caught up in everything that we have done because nothing will ever force God to come to us and say "Here, this is what I owe you!" This was what the Jews had a hard time understanding in reference to the Law of Moses. They felt that their lineage of Abraham and possession of the Law meant that they were saved. Yet, the Law that they relied on immediately would condemn them and never justify them once they committed sin. This is the beauty of grace through Jesus. God's gift of righteousness (making us righteous and justifying us) is through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and His being resurrected.
