I am sure most of use using many different versions for study, but I thought I'd take an informal poll to see what versions are most used for primary study. As we're only allowed ten options, I tried to pick the more common English translations.

Also, I'm not trying to leave out non-English speakers, but again, there is a limit. I'm bilingual myself (German/English), so read the scriptures in both tongues.

Thanks for voting.

HI Hezekiah :D

Hope you don't mind, but I moved your topic into the General Forum leaving a link from the Bible Study forum. :D

I use the NKJV a lot on my PC, but I use the NIV at home. I also use the Net Bible with it's study notes a lot when I'm doing bible studies. Sometimes, depending on the study, I'll use the KJV with Strongs links.

Thanks!

Nope, don't mind at all. :D

You mentioned study on the PC. That sure is an effective way to study! I started with Bible software in the 80s (much clunkier then), but still use it to this day. eSword is a good one should anyone be looking for an application to study with.

God bless.

I'm glad you don't mind the move, thanks!

eSword is pretty good. I've actually got a program called Sword Searcher that I bought on a recommendation years ago. It's pretty good, but I believe eSword does the same thing, just cheaper

My best study though, really comes from audio  I spend a lot of time in the car, and I have the NIV on CD (and partially on my Zune). I find that if I just listen or read the Bible as a story, it makes more sense as a way of life and when I come to study a topic, it just brings so much more to the table :D

That's a great way to be immersed in God's Word. I used to work alone at a remote location and listened to the Bible and sermons via the Internet and cassette. I miss all that "input."

Isn't this more of a Christian Chat topic...I know I have a few threads for this in there somewhere.

I voted KJ/NKJ. I also use Young's Literal and Green's LITV at times for a mire literal reading. I tend to stick to versions based on the Textus Receptus. I use Adam Clarke's commentaries to get many historical commentaries on passages.

I quote here using the KJV most the time.

Yeah, I love just listening to it as a story (my favorite is Zondrvan's dramatized NIV). You can download the NIV in audio format from a few different online sources for free though. I found a dramatized version and just a plane, dry, dull reading of the NT out there. Just do a google search and find what suites your ears 8-)

I'm really disapointed though, cause I put the whole NT and a good chunk of the OT on my Zune and Microsoft Sync inside my car messed up the indexing. Nothing like going from Genesis 1 to Genesis 40 to Genesis 13... :x Thanks Microsoft :-D

I study from the KJ read out of NKJ and usually look into the NLT and NIV for wording more appropriate for kids, since some of my studies go into teachings they need to understand.

KJ has always been the most reliable version from my perspective to seek out definitions and do Strong's and Lexicon searches out of. The old English is familiar to me, and I prefer the beauty and drama it adds using phrases like ... "an horror of great darkness fell upon him." AND "... the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." I like to write poetry--- so wording and phrasology is important to me. ( And I think to our Lord as well.)

Blueletterbible.org is my easy access study site-- the commentaries include such men of faith as Jameson-Fausset+Brown, Spurgeon, Stedman, Henry, Missler, Walter Martin, Guzik, Mc Gee, Newton, Walvoord, Lightfoot, Eastman, Torrey, Calvin, Chaffer, Murray, Luther, and many others. The COOL thing is you can listen to commentaries audibly or read thru them. This site also includes Strongs word search, Lexicon, several Bible dictionaries, an ISBE, devotionals, and sayings NOT found in scripture as well. ;-) Yep, It's a-good un'.

Best studies prove to be reading with prayer thou ... :-) bonnie

I am very interested in the upcoming New Living Translation Study Bible which will be coming out in September. Looks very promising. Also, the ESV Study Bible, arriving at the same time. I possess many of the mainline study Bibles: NIV study Bible, Quest, Scofield in KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB; Ryrie NASB; New Jerusalem; KJ Study Bible; NET; Reformation; Spirit Filled;

if I had to say primary, I'd probably go with the Ryrie. Kind of a toss-up, though.

Off topic...

Steve,

I read some of the HCSB; I didn't like the way it "reads". Sorry bro. :(

I voted for the RSV, but I actually use the RSV-CE

Ooooo! YES! I really like the Thompson Chain Reference, it taught me to seek interpretations from scripture first and foremost. Letting God explain His wonderful word~ Himself.
Yep, Turn, that's a keeper. :smt004 bonnie

I'm becoming a fan of the ESV(English Standard Version). It's Good for both literal translations and readability. I also like Thompson's Chain Reference, but mines an NASB. It's hard for me to stick with just one translation. Some days I'll pull out my 4 in 1 Bible and go Amplified.

We memorize from the KJV. I love it.

For study, I use the KJV, and also the NASB. I would like to own the ESV too. I like studylight for personal online Bible Study, but I study with my husband and children a lot, and online study is not the best for this.

I like the devotional, "Streams In The Desert" too. The one I have is a beautiful leather bound edition, and was given to me by a good friend some years ago...she buys one every year, makes notes in it, and then gives them away to people. I love reading the devotional, and then in addition to that reading over her sweet, and thoughtful, notes. She is a beautiful Godly woman, and I can learn what the Holy Spirit was teaching her as she went through...pretty neat.

The Lord bless you.

Hey Tim,
Is that kinda like Jolt Cola? :-D

No, my Parrallel Bible has four translations in it and one of them is the Amplified version.
