Hey All,
Hi Walter and Debbie.
May I add to your study something I compiled? I am going to put it on the Apologetics forum as well for discussion. It's a critical topic.
The phrase "son of man" is found in the Old Testament. It can be used for a single person; for example (Psalms 8:4), or all humanity. (Ezekiel 2:1) But the two I want to discuss, stand out as meaning something different. Numbers 23:19, and Daniel 7:13-14
Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
The "son o man" used here is singular, and given the same attribute as God. So is this speaking of all mankind? It doesn't seem so.
and
Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
This passage is clearly a messianic prophecy. The priests and scribes of Jesus' time knew it as such. Here are just a few of the 300+ in the Old Testament.
Genesis 49:10-"The scepter will not depart from Judah . . . "
Numbers 24:17-19-Reference to Genesis 49:10.
Psalm 2:7-9:-" . . . Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee."
Psalm 60:7-" . . . Judah my scepter.”
The Messiah is begotten of God, and He is the everlasting king.
Literally, the God king.
This out of the writings of Moses, David, and Daniel.
Time passes:
Then Jesus comes out with this.
John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Jesus uses the phrase to describe Himself.
The crowd knew what it meant and questioned Him.
John 12:34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
Jesus was claiming to be Messiah.
The priests and scribes knew exactly what this meant. (Danil 7:13-14)
Jesus was claiming to be God.
And that started the series of events resulting in Jesus' crucifixion.
And now we individually have to decide:
Is Jesus the son of god, or is He the Son of God?
Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,
Taz
