Why Do Black Churches Have Steady Membership

Brother Lewis, trials brings God’s people to depend on Him. I do not know your thoughts on Pharaoh of Egypt, but when a plague was upon him he repented and would have let Israel go. God would then call off the sentence of whatever and that emboldened Pharaoh and hardened his heart. Exo 8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

The black populace in this country has probably suffered more at the hands of others than any other people in the Americas, and as the result has kept them in a state of need of our LORD. If you want to know the transformation of time upon them, read the lyrics of Black Spirituals and you’ll see the lives they led.

The following URL link gives a hint by clicking on to individual songs. Much of the youth of these churches have not kept their family’s lead, but the result will again lead the consequences that will once again bring them to repentance.

Yes you are correct, my church has about 5000 members or more and I can't ever remember a Sunday where people did not come up and accept the Lord.

They've had strong faith even from the days of slavery, often relating their lot to the Egyptians under Pharaoh. They experienced revival again when being misplaced under Hurricane Katrina and losing everything. Redemption through great suffering. Refinement upon the anvil. Purification by fire. In my own life while out in the community I've noticed that black people are more deeply touched and thankful for words of encouragement or monetary donations. I've noticed that their faith is much more child like and (I'm not trying to generalize), although congregants may be sometimes more simple in their theology, their heart for God, and their zeal for worship is unparalleled.

Black churches can be the inspiration for a spiritual awakening in even the whitest of whites.

When Dietrich Bonhoeffer was in New York in 1930, he was in demand as lecturer about the German situation and the possibility for another war. He also lectured on Karl Barth in a systematic theology seminar of John Baillie. Yet, Bonhoeffer probably learned much more than he taught…

This was due largely to his involvement in Harlem, where for over six months he was a regular visitor. Bonhoeffer’s love affair with the cultural Mecca of Negro America began with an invitation from fellow student Albert F. (“Frank”) Fisher to visit Abyssinian Baptist Church. Captivated by the emotional style of worship and the powerful sermons of legendary preacher Adam Clayton Powell Sr., Dietrich became active in the church’s ministry (Stephen R. Haynes and Lori Brandt Hale, Bonhoeffer for Armchair Theologians, 20-21).

Bonhoeffer took that passion with him back to Germany.
