Why do students bring in apples for their teachers? Why not oranges or bananas?

Believe it or not, my grandpa was a prairie house one-room schoolhouse teacher back in the 40's. Sometime before he died, I asked him about that. According to him, the tradition stemmed from the old days, when bartering was an acceptable form of payment for services, and teachers were paid directly by the parents of children. Parents would send food with their kids as a method of payment for services, and in turn they got an education for the children. Somehow, the apple became the stereotype, and the tradition was born.

Because an apple a day keeps the doctor away and if the teacher stays healthy, they're won't be the need for those silly substitute teachers. :D
