JANUARY 3rd 2016 MATTHEW 18:7-9 BAD BODY PARTS.
Matthew 18:7 "Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!" (ESV) In the ESV, I feel this is closer to the intent of what God is saying. I think it's saying that because the world is God's enemy, and the world constantly throws temptations to sin against us, the "woe" will be played out when God destroys the present heaven and earth.
I like what Albert Barnes had to say about this verse. "It must needs be ... - That is, such is the depravity of man that there will be always some who are attempting to make others sin; some people of wickedness endeavoring to lead Christians astray, and rejoicing when they have succeeded in causing them to fall. Such, also, is the strength of our native corruption and the force of passion, that our besetting sins will lead us astray." (copied from e-Sword.com)
There are those who actually are jealous of the good life that some Christians live. Especially in the workplace, that jealous person will try and cause the Christian to swear or commit various sins. they will set some kind of trap in hopes the Christian will fall, just for kicks. Sad indeed. Perhaps someone here at cf.net has had a similar experience.
A second "woe" is for the individual who perpetrates a temptation to cause a believer in Christ Jesus to sin. It is my opinion that even if the Christian fails to be tempted, woe to the tempter anyway!
Matthew 18:8 "And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire." Oh boy, here's a verse that has caused a lot of questions to Pastor's and Teachers over the years. In on case, a person said that he knew of a relative who had joined a weird cult that cut off one of his ears because he listened to a dirty joke at work.
This statement of Jesus is called a "hyperbole" (intentional overstatement). To me this is a dramatic statement of Jesus that sin is a serious assault on the love and grace of God. A true believer in Christ Jesus will not end up in hell because of forgiveness of sin, BUT, for the one who is not serious about his/her profession, it serves as a warning that could come true, IMO.

Simply a duel statement of the Master to reinforce the danger of continuing in a favorite enjoyment that would be considered a sin. Repentance is the only way to stop a besetting sin. To continue in sin is an earmark of someone who isn't saved or one who is not serious about their profession, that's dangerous.
I look forward to this new year. My prayer for all those who join and are a part of this Bible Study family is prosperity of soul and body. May God's Grace, Peace and Joy find each one of you. It certainly is my honor and joy to present these studies, thank you for your participation.

The body parts?
I believe it is talking about the body of the bride, the church.
We should all be one.
But if one brings in false doctrine, we are to cut them off.
Cut out the false doctrine.
As stated , one group is the eye, the other the foot, but all should work together, one body, spirit, mind.

If I may reply I have no training in Biblical matters. so what I have to say may be totally wrong. After I read these verses a few times the idea popped into mind that they are talking about the body of Christ. As in the church. Im sure all here remember the man ( Matt 8:21-22 )that wanted to follow Christ but first wanted to bury his father and Jesus said let the dead bury the dead. Meaning that his father and family had not accepted Jesus and they were dead as in dead to life ( John 14:6 )eternal. I have a hard time believing a man can cleanse himself by ripping his eye out or cutting of a leg. So I do not read these as a physical thing to do. ( 1 Corin 12:12 ) is speaking of the body of Christ and in that body are many parts like in the physical body. So for me the vision of the church is a person guiding the flock and if found to be misguiding rip it out.
Just how these verses came to me. I do apologize if I have interrupted things.

On the contrary Roro. You and dianecook have the same mindset. As I told Sister Diane, I hadn't thought of the Church. Your comment makes sense in a very real way. I'd say that the Holy Spirit showed you and Diane another possible meaning to these verses. Thank you very much.

This is the physical hint about spiritual bad apples.
Parables do contain spiritual truths. The problem arises in that the carnal mind does not usually see the spiritual truth. The disciples did not thank Jesus for speakin in parables, but had to ask what the parable of the sower meant. Matthew 13 , Msrk 4 , Isaiah 6 ( why parables - hidden truth). So seeing they might not see .....
Sepsis a body wide problem: brought about by a local infection that could have been cured by cutting off / removing the body part that is infected. Removing a gangrene limb allows you to re-enter physical life / with health. If you choose to keep the dying part the whole body usually sees sepsis set in. Multiple body organs can be permantely damaged. Fever usually can be permanent.
I watched a man die by trying to keep a leg damaged in a truck accident (years ago).
The spiritual parallel has already been mentioned. You have to cut off the spiritual person capable of infecting the whole body of believers. The beauty of grace: once removed from fellowship and turned over to Satan, they may repent, regain spiritual health and be welcomed back into fellowship.
I can list scriptures if needed.

For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. 12. How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? 13. And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of thatsheep,than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. 14. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. (KJV)
First, it seems that many manuscripts leave out Verse 11. IMO, it makes sense to include it because there seems to be a natural spiritual flow due to the context. I am disappointed that my favorite ESV was one that left it out.

It could be people who are very humble and are usually found in the background, and might not be considered very spiritual. It wasn't long ago when the Disciples were pondering who was the greatest among them. A "little one" would have been the one on the bottom of the list.
A "little one" might be a new convert, or a born again child. It also could also mean someone who is mentally challenged. In viewing our modern day churches, these folk are likely passed over. That's a big mistake because many times the "silent ones" are extremely gifted in some crucial areas, they just lack boldness to step forward.
Certain denominations sometimes look down on others, thinking they are the favored ones. Certainly the cults fit in this category as they view biblical Christianity.
Notice the involvement of angels as they minister (Hebrews 1:14 "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" to these "little ones" Just like in the book of Job, these angels report to God what has been happening to them.
I'll cease for now, and pick up on the rest later on.

Little one may refer to Christians like me that are still on milk.

Verse 11 is in mine.
That verse reminds me of, Matt.15:24
I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Also the part about the sheep, reminds me of the prodigal son.
My thoughts....
I have two bibles here at hand. The KJV has 11. The NAS has it but in brackets. Young's Literal Translation also has it. I don't know why it was added but will take a guess. The Adultress Woman was also added and this is known because it was not in the older manuscripts found. Mathew 11 is probably for the same reason - a scribe, or a translator, might have added it to add importance.
The Lost Sheep is a favorite parable to show the love God has for us. Used all the time for teaching kids.
Why would a shepherd leave 99 sheep to go look for the one? Because he loves each and everyone of them and each one is very important to him.
To me the "little ones" are the humble persons who are following Jesus and giving up of themselves to do God's will. They put themselves second and think of the other first. Boisterous and egotistical people always think of themselves and their needs first, and then of others (if at all, sometimes). Jesus was talking about stumbling blocks just before verse 10. "Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks" Mathew 18:7 NAS Maybe the little ones could also be the persons who stumble. The ones who are hurt by this world and its ways.
The lost sheep represents us, of course. When we leave the pack or herd and go astray. We were in the fold, but decide to stray off for whatever reason and for whatever purpose. God will always be calling to us, His voice will be heard, calling us back to the fold, to join the herd once again. This reminds me of The Prodigal Son, as a previous poster stated. In the Prodigal Son it is he who realizes his mistake and returns to his father. In The Lost Sheep it's the shepherd who goes to look for the lost sheep. Both are working together. The Prodigal Son heard the voice of the Shepherd looking for him and returned to his Father.
Because it is not the will of the Father that anyone should perish so He does all He can to keep us in the fold.
I think also because it's difficult for us to live alone, away from others who believe as we do. It's good for us to stay together and encourage each other. In action is nice, but even just in word is sufficient. To share in the joy of knowing the Lord. To be able to speak to someone who knows "what you're talking about."
Verse 13 should be encouraging to anyone who has sinned - as all will. God rejoices when we're sorry and show a desire to remain IN HIM. The father in the Prodigal Son also loved the son that never left him. But rejoiced when the lost son returned. The return of a lost sheep is a joyous occasion.
Both the shepherd and the sheep are happy to be back together again --

I'm certainly glad that V.11 is in the Scriptures because I certainly was a lost soul waiting to be found by the Master Jesus. I simply can't imagine my life without Jesus, the Son of God.
