Instead of being sorry about my sins to God and asking for his forgiveness, would it be better to ask and repent? What I mean is since we have to repent for our sins, is it better to repent and then ask God for forgiveness for our sin(s)? Does that not make it look more like we are willing to change our ways rather than praying every day asking God for forgiveness? I know the bible says that I must ask God for forgiveness and repent, however, repenting does not mean being sorry; it means to change your ways. What are your guy's thoughts on this? By the way, when I say do not have to pray for forgiveness, I don't mean give up praying altogether.

Thanks for your opinion in advance

Observation: You wrote, "Does that not make it look more like we are willing to change our ways rather than praying every day asking God for forgiveness?"

God doesn't look at our outward appearance but rather He looks at our heart for out of our hearts "proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man." (Matthew 15:19-20 NKJV)

The Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV

We are sinful beings and we need to repent from all things sinful. You are correct that repent means to change. It means to change from running away from God to seeking God. It's a complete change of heart, mind, and attitude.

I found this to be a good explanation of repentance.

Hope this helps.

So, according to the article, repentance isn't work, it's God who pulls us in. Does that mean if i was commiting adultery, I should continue to be one and wait on God to change my heart? What about if I watched porn, is it the same thing? I guess I am still lost; I still do not understand.

This start right now is just a redneck description of repentance.

We can live our life unaware of sin offending God. We hear / read / come in contact with the description of sin.
We realize we sin.
We repent of those sins.
We turn from those sins.

Where does that leave us?
Lost and undone.
We are left in a condition of great need.
………..

Then
We hear the good news (Gospel).
Jesus died so that we might be forgiven of those sins that we have realized / confessed in repentance.

Salvation (being saved) is in the name of Jesus. We learn everything about How God sent his son that we might have eternal life.
……….

Now what?
Usually the desire / command to help others receive forgiveness comes. The ability to do this required the Holy Spirit.
Which Jesus gives.
……….,.,

Very rough overview
Matthew 28:19 kjv
19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Steps;
The Father - Repent
The Son - Jesus for salvation
The Holy Spirit - Power to witness

Start understanding repentance and move along through all steps.

Matthew 28:20 kvv
20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

So to make sure I understood you correctly, since I could remember, Ive always liked watching porn. Obviously, God is not okay with that. Does that mean I should continue watching it and asking God for forgiveness? I am still not getting it. Why is this hard!! I just want to know how to truly repent; that is it. You and WIP have said the something. I know God and I know he forgives me, but that does not mean I should take advantage of his mercy. Are you guys saying I did God's work, saving other people, only will I truly begin to repent?

Sin is progressive. It can get worse and worse. The dominion of sin is when you no longer have any use for God.

So you will have to decide what your sin is.
Lust of eyes
Lust of flesh
Pride of life
Other.

May be more than one.

You want to progress in God? God asks each of us privately (sometimes). One may hear
(Are riches keeping you from God?)
You may hear another question ( as in your post). Ask God he will answer you.

I will give others a chance to answer you.

What I mean is since we have to repent for our sins, is it better to repent and then ask God for forgiveness for our sin(s)?

If one is sorry, one intends not to repeat what one had to be sorry for. Being sorry and repentance is the same.
( yes I know there are differences. )

The Christian cannot just repent without being sorry equally he cannot be sorry without repenting.

After Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost there was a questioned presented to him and he gave them the answer.

Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

John 3:5-7 Jesus was teaching Nicodemus that it was a Spiritual rebirth or renewal of our spirit that through Gods spoken word we can reconcile our past sins through repentance to be made sinless again before God. We are all born with a sin nature because of sin being introduced into the world through Satan’s deceit when he told Eve it was alright to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil even though God forbid them to eat of it. Our flesh will always sin because the flesh is never in obedience to God.

Sin separates us from God because God is a spirit and can only recognize his own children by what spirit is living in their hearts. We have to renew, rebirth - born again, Gods Spirit within us in order to be called a child of God and see the kingdom of heaven. We now put off the old man (flesh) and put on the new man (Spirit). We are renewed by the word of God and through the Holy Spirit teaching us of all things. John 14:26; Colossians 3:1-17

Insinuating a person was never saved if they commit a sin.
Instead of being sorry about my sins to God and asking for his forgiveness, would it be better to ask and repent?
Yes.
There is no sorrow inherent in repeated sin.
Repentance from sin is turning from sin permanently.

I read your background. You are on a journey that is not in my exact background.

The Jews were under the law till Jesus was revealed. The law reveals sin but there is no right standing / righteousness under the law. God realizes I who we are and where you are going. For_His_Glory is taking you down the spiritual path in Christ Jesus.
People raised under the law may want you to perfectly follow the Law of Moses. That has passed away. The law is spiritual but does not provide righteousness, Jesus does that.

Acts 15:19 NIV
19. “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.
20. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.
21. For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”
22. Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers.

My prayer is that you understand that it is not God’s plan to make things difficult for you.

I suggest you read Matthew chapters 5,6,7. These chapters deal with our inner thoughts.

It mentions the new way of looking at the law.
Anger is addressed
Love your enemies
The lord’s prayer
Treasures in heaven

Inner thoughts

I believe my real question was how to repent. With the explanations, everyone is saying that I need to repent. If not, I still do not understand. Therefore, I looked up how to repent and got this one among the others. If you guys have time, could you let me know if I am on the right track?

To summarize what I learned from the video and using the example above, I will continue to watch porn even if I have asked God for strength against my temptation until God has finally freed me from this sin. How close am I? Did I get the message correct? Thank you in advance.

Yes.
There is no sorrow inherent in repeated sin.
Repentance from sin is turning from sin permanently.

Two repentances mean the first repentance was a lie to God.
We can't forge a relationship with God that is based on lies.

I will keep you in my prayers.
To reply to the part where you said "was a lie to God," doesn't God look at our hearts and understand what we truly meant? Please clarify if this is not the correct thinking. I have been watching sermons that say you do not have to pray correctly (meaning he knows your true intentions). Also if God is all-knowing, would he not know if I truly meant to repent and just struggling? If you have time, please look at the link that I have shared in this thread and let me know if I am correct or what the correct thought process is. Thank you.

So to make sure I understood you correctly, since I could remember, Ive always liked watching porn.
And coming from your previous religion that may not be a sin.

However it is a sin if we hear Jesus say that to look at a woman to lust after her you have already committed adultery in your heart.

Matthew 5:27 kjv
27. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28. But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

That could mean a sneak look or a 10 hour internet view. I stand guilty of looking at a woman to lust after her. Is that a sin? Yes.

Did I confess that as a sin? Yes. Do I have the will to stop it?
Romans 7:18 kjv
18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

24. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Repentance confesses the sin. The power of Jesus in us is our hope of salvation .

At the last trump we are changed.

After we accept Jesus we can not return to continual confession of sin. We trust in his power to save us.
If we do right it is his work and not ours.
Repentance does not save us from sin. Jesus saves us.

Repentance confesses we are a sinner. We turn from sin and accept the work Jesus did.

Now half the world will condemn KJV and tell me to repent.

Romans 5:21 kjv
21. That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:1 kjv
1. What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2. God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Ok maybe. Here we go
Romans 5:21
Our lost state is that we are living in sin bound for hell.
Not God’s fault
Jesus died for our sins. If we do not acknowledge our sins his redemption does not apply to us.

1 John 1:9 kjv
9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We first have to admit to sin before we can be saved.

Which comes first the chicken or the egg?
A chicken has a limited life time. That egg in the chicken is the only hope of that chicken DNA lining forever.
We must admit sin before the born again spirit enters us. We must be born again.
First confess sin then be born again.
1 John 1:9
Repentance confesses sin.

Not
I will remain a sinner till he removes sin from me (then I will quit sin).
But
If I will admit my sin Jesus goes to work.

Do not rely on eddif for salvation.
Do not listen to a video for salvation
Listen to the Word of God become flesh speak. Then receive the quickening spirit Jesus became inside you. That quickening spirit will work inside you.
1 Corinthians 15:45 kjv
45. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

The spirit of God does the work in us .

The egg in the chicken is the hope of continued life.

Good Heavens...

Made simple, the word "repent" essentially means to "turn away from something," as in regret for doing it. As a result, asking for forgiveness is something you would have to continue to do so long as you are still sinning. If the sin has been truly "repented" of, by the strict sense of the word, it means you are no longer doing it. Hence there would no longer be the need to ask forgiveness.

To truly repent of a sin means you turn from it and don't practice it anymore.

If you know that God is not ok with you watching porn as it is a sin, as well as adultery, then you need to humble yourself before Jesus and repent of the lust and sincerely pray and ask God to forgive you and help you to abstain from such things. Please read Colossians 3:1-17 as this will help you to learn what God sees as sinful. This will also teach you what it is to be in Christ and He in you.

To repent is to know you are a sinner saved by God's free gift of grace through faith that is Christ Jesus who will always forgive a true heart of repentance. Repent and turn away from that which is evil in the eyes of the Lord.

There is no such thing as sinless perfection until this corruptible has put on incorruptible and this mortal has put on immortality.

1Cor 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Cor 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

1Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

The word "holiness" means set apart or purposefully different. It doesn't mean "perfection". God being holy and perfect means He is completely different than the imperfect world we live in and He is perfect, meaning He upholds every aspect of righteousness all the time because He is God. It is that same perfection that is seen in the Father that we strive for everyday of our lives here on earth. We are made righteous by that of God's righteousness as our own is as a filthy rag to God.

While here on earth we do strive to be holy as we draw closer to God and learn of Him, but yet we will never achieve full perfection until this corruptible puts on incorruption, and this mortal puts on immortality. This can only happen when Christ returns and we are changed by the Holy Spirit to be then made perfect as we are caught up into the clouds to meet Jesus in the air.

God knows we will stumble and fall short at times as we are yet humans, but God is greater than the mistakes we make and is always there to pick us up, dust us off and set our feet straight again when we humble ourselves before Him. All our sins have been forgiven and we have been made clean again in our spirit by the blood of Christ as we are Spiritually born again from above and sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption, Ephesians 4:30.
