Have any of you ever struggled with weight, or, do any of you actively pursue and maintain a healthy lifestyle? Ever lost a lot of weight? Are you trying to lose weight?

A couple of days ago I started a high protein, low carb diet, doctor ordered. Got a weekly Vit-B injection and daily phentermine regimen to assist me in my goal. I'm a big man and always have been, but lately it's been on my heart to change. God never intended for us to be slothful I don't believe, and it's now or never for me.

Anyone else on this road? Want to chime in with some advice or share your story?

Wish I could help you but I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I work out several times a week and I run a fair amount, so yes I have a healthy lifestyle.

I recently lost 8 pounds... and I don't know why. I'm eating all the time and I can't afford to loose that much weight with my body size. I can feel the difference at this weight... I don't have the endurance or strength. I've added a protein drink to my mid morning in hopes that would help me put the weight back on, but I've only gained a pound in the last week, and I've even cut down on my workouts.

I'm up and down with my weight loss. I was moved to day shift on my job and was surprised to see the difference it had on my metabolism. I lost 20 pounds because I slept and ate like a normal person again. :)

If you went from graveyard to "normal" folk hours, I could see putting on some pounds. I thought I read somewhere a long time ago the importance of natural sunlight and how it effects our metabolism. Odd how it's all connected huh?

I want to give the sun a hug. :)........... but it burns my peel. :sad

So far so good. The medication does what it's supposed to, curbs appetite and provides a boost of energy. I'm on a 1200 calorie diet, clocking in at 2:30pm at 623 calories after breakfast and lunch. I feel so much better, there's a peace of mind in knowing that you're doing what's right for yourself. Going to hit the gym in a few hours and get some cardio in. Good stuff.

That's awesome Damascus!
I was becoming a sloth many years ago so I decided to start running again. I didn't make it out of my driveway and my calves hurt... and just in front of our yard I had to walk. That "Little" jog down to the end of the street and back all of a sudden looked more like a mountain. It took me two weeks to make it to the corner and back without stopping.

Several months later I ran my first 10 mile race. Haven't looked back since ;)

That's very encouraging, StoveBolts. Thank you for sharing. :)

I've got a goal and I'm going to stick to it. By this time next year I will be a different man, no doubt about it.

Maybe I'll hook up with you on down the road and run a race with you, if the good Lord doesn't come back and take us before then. ;)

Sounds like a plan!

What I can tell you is this. And I don't mean it as a discouragement. It's tough to change your lifestyle to becoming more active. Your going to hurt, and your going to want to quit. Push through it one battle at a time and never keep your eye off your goal. BTW, always have a goal!

There will be days you don't feel like doing anything... Don't let those days get the better of you. Take charge and push through it. You can do this! :waving :thumbsup

Jeff (stove) is the kinda guy that makes me wanna... :gah

I worked with a guy who piled in food like every meal was his last, and he was 120 pounds soaking wet!

About 8 years ago, my family and I returned from a summer vacation, and I weighed a personal high of 200 pounds. It's all relative, and to me, that was my big wake up call. As there are diet fads that come and go, the real key for those who aren't "Jeff's" (love you, brother! :) ) is to train the body to taking in less calories and exercise. Three years from the time I applied myself to a healthier lifestyle, I completed my first - and only... ever! - 26 mile marathon. It was a goal and symbolic for me.

There are no secrets to this, but many people wanting to sell books want us to believe there are. Lower caloric intake and exercise. That's the secret that's not a secret, as much as we try to find other ways.

Just wanted to chime in here and say that I stayed at 1400 calories today intake, and just burned 700 of those calories at the gym in an hour and a half. :nod

Limit calories, increase activity, DRINK LOTS OF WATER! People tend to forget that one little miracle cure. Sure, Atkins, WeightWatchers and all that is nice, but if you forget water, you're missing out on something.

I've never had a problem with weight. I'm almost 20, I'm 5'8" and weigh about 60kg, so about 132 pounds.

I was put on 100 carbs per. Thats not much. I take chromium picolinate and 3-6K of fish oil per.
I work in construction so I have not started any regular exercise regimen. Started this a year ago mid Feb and Im down 30 #. Just above High School weight. (cheated over the Holidays and put back five pounds, four are gone now,btw High School was 39 years ago )

Before I was on prilosec every day and even with that I could often go through more than a roll of Tums a day. By the second week I was down to one prilosec a week, by mid March last, I had taken my last one.

Beer is out, but red wine and hard stuff are ok. And I chomp about 3# of almonds a week. We get them at Cosco and roast them in the oven. Part of the diet involved cutting out potatoes, I eat less than one per month. I avoid artificial sweeteners, no diet coke or sugar free sweets that sort of thing.

So far I havent bothered about calories, I might need to get past that last 5 pounds

I hope it helps you as much as it has me.

About 25 years ago i lost 129 pounds in 9 months. (no there was not a baby involved) To God went the glory! Gave a couple talks on the how etc in the local church... To God went the glory! Time has a way of slipping by I became proud of MY accomplishment :sad The battle started...I have never yet put it it all back on. Now it is a constant battle i pray some day God will grant the Grace He showed 25 years ago...

nick get in the gym,. put on some muscle.
:thumbsup

I understand where Nick is coming from though. I was always on the skinny side of things through high school and much of college. In my late teens and early 20's, I was around 160 lbs, at 6' 4". Now, close to the end of my 30's, I'm around 210, from hitting the weights on and off for the last 15+ years. I'm far from toned though and plan to see what I can shed before July. But right now it's bulk up time.

(I mean no offense to Nick. I completely understand and many people don't know just how difficult it can be for thinner guys to gain weight. And of course, some thinner guys just don't care to put on weight, and that is fine too.)

For the vast majority of people (excluding those with other underlying health issues), to gain weight, eat more calories than you burn; to lose weight, burn more calories than you eat. Very simple arithmetic but much easier said than done on the weight loss side of things.

Don't look at it as dieting; look at it as a lifestyle change, it has to be, or it will all come back.

^This. :thumbsup This is what kept me getting back into the gym. There have been many times where it's been a couple of months or a year (perhaps more) that I wouldn't be in the gym. Then I would look back at what I had lost and think, "If only I hadn't stopped, not only would I not have lost the muscle mass, I would have been that much bigger." Keep in mind what you will be thinking this time next year if you stick to it. You will likely regret it if you stop.

It is generally understood that the first 3 months are the hardest. You need to keep going and get your body and mind in the habit. If you can, get a partner to go with. If your doctor okays it, hit the weights. Increased muscle mass will burn more calories. If you hit the weights, definitely try and get a partner who knows what they're doing or, if finances allow, get a personal trainer, even if it's just for a few sessions.

A year from now you'll be looking back at this time. Keep that in mind every day.

when i joined the army i weighed the same as nick.

i was 5ft 9 then and well if you understand this joke you get a laugh. i grew in army inches. somehow when i weigh in each year its either 71" or 70"

All is well. Really feeling the burn right now after spending 2 hours in the gym tonight with my brother and his girlfriend, who decided to come along tonight. I've got a lot of people backing me up on this and cheering me on, so it's a lot easier for me to get up and do it when I have such a good support system. Surprisingly, I haven't missed the soda at all, and the dieting has come along pretty easily so far. Thank God.

I'm sure there will be dry days coming, but I'm enjoying the "beginners grace" so far. Can't wait to do the weigh-in at the end of the month. As far as I understand, the fat burns off a lot faster when you have a lot to lose.

I meant to ask you, Reba, what sort of eating/exercise regimen did you follow to drop that weight? Curious. :)

Hmm, I used to be chubby as a kid, but I thinned out during puberty. My youngest brother is quite obese, though. I've been trying to get him to exersize, but he's too lazy. How can I motivate him?
