I thought we were dealing with the context of Mark 13?
There is no context in Mark 13 of the Temple and city destruction. NONE! ZERO!
There is a minor reference in Luke 21, that may or may not refer to the Roman army.
20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.
We see this same language in Zechariah -
1 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city
shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. 4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the
Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south. 5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Thus the Lord my God will come, And all the saints with You. 6 It shall come to pass in that day That there will be no light; The lights will diminish. 7 It shall be one day Which is known to the Lord-- Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light. 8 And in that day it shall be That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. 9 And the Lord shall be
King over all the earth. In that day it shall be-- "The Lord is one," And His name one.
12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their
eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. 13 It shall come to pass in that day That a great panic from the Lord will be among them. Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor, And raise his hand against his neighbor's hand; 14 Judah also will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations Shall be gathered together: Gold, silver,
and apparel in great abundance. 15 Such also shall be the plague On the horse and the mule, On the camel and the donkey, And on all the cattle that will be in those camps. So shall this plague be. 16 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.
And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.
We know this didn't happen in 70 AD!

We certainly know this is not happening today!
It is likely that Luke 21 is a reference to this event in Zechariah 14.

In Mark's account of the olivet discourse in Mark 13, we find strong contextual evidence which points to a 70AD fulfillment of the AOD and Jesus' "coming in the clouds".
Mark 13:1-4 "And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here?
And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings,? There shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
And as he sat upon the mount of olives over against the temple, Peter James and John and Andrew asked Jim privately.
Tell us, when shall these things be, and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
Notice that the disciples questions are ONLY about Jerusalems destruction and NOT about the "end of the age" as in Math.24.
"When shall these things be...."
That is, when shall every stone be thrown down (when will Jerusalem be destroyed)?
"...What shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?"
That is, what will signify that Jerusalems destruction is about to take place?
I submit to you that the answers to these questions are found in verses 14 and 30
The "time" when Jerusalem was destroyed was within "that (this) generation" (v30)
"...this generation shall not pass until all these things be done"
The "sign" which signified this destruction was immenent was SEEING the AOD (v14)
"But when YOU shall see the AOD.....then let them that be in Judea flee into the mountains"
The fact that Jesus says that the disciples would SEE the AOD and SEE his "coming in the
clouds" in the context of answering their questions about Jerusalems destruction is very significant.
Powerful contextual evidence indeed that the AOD and Jesus' coming in the clouds were connected to and fulfilled by 70ad
Question: Since the disciples only asked questions about a first century event (Jerusalems destruction), why would Jesus mention the "SEEING" of the AOD and his "coming in the clouds" as part of his answer?

You are exactly right. Here is a reprised list of the historical events that fulfilled Matt 24.
All of Matt 24 has been fulfilled as of 70AD. It was not a “falling away†from Christianity that Paul talked about but rather the “rebellion†against Rome. After the rebellion started it was then that the Terrorist leader Eleazar ben Simon took over the Temple and desecrated it worse then it ever had been in history. The word translated “falling away†can and often is translated "Rebellion.†It all fits together very well - that is, the prophesies of Jesus, Paul, and Daniel. This passage in Thess 2 came to pass just 14 years after it was written by Paul in 52AD.
The sequence of events were as follows...
- The restrainer was taken away – Shekinah glory seen leaving the temple just before Pentecost in 66AD
- The “rebellion†begins (falling away) Eleazar ben Ananus stopped the daily sacrifice for the emperor - an act of war.
- The terrorists took over the Temple
- Agrippa II sent an army to put down the rebellion (failed)
- Nero sent Cestius with the 12th legion to quell the rebellion
- Army surrounding city (12th legion)
- Man of sin is in control of the Temple - Eleazar ben Simon
- Cestius fled for no known reason on Chesvan 5th 66AD
- Terrorists pursued Cestius – destroyed most of 12th legion (5,800 killed)
- Terrorists were gone out of Jerusalem in pursuit of Cestius for 8 days
- Christians had only 8 days to flee Judea and the city.
- Christians fled to Pella according to tradition
- Daniel's clock began on Cheshvan 4th 66AD.
- 1,290 days later the daily sacrifice failed (70AD Tammuz 17th )
- 45 days later the terrorists surrendered to Titus (1,335 days)
- Everyone was shocked and surprised when the terrorists surrendered
- God had cut the siege short so the elect could survive
- The city and the Temple were totally destroyed
- Only one structure remained – the fortress Antonia – now errantly called the Temple Mount.
Jesus said that “Immediately after the tribulation of those days†(70AD) he was going to return for his people in his second coming, which would have been the end of time. But as we know in hindsight this was delayed because it was contingent on the fathers will.
Yes, All of the events of Matt 24 have been fulfilled as of 70AD – except as noted.

What was meant by the " stones" that Jesus said would be thrown down if they were not the stones of the temple and the buildings of Jerusalem?
What I wrote was a simple summary of a very large subject taken mostly from Josephus' The wars of the Jews about the fulfillment of the combined prophesies of Daniel, Jesus, and Paul which all fit together.
So I have overlaid their compatible prophesies over top of history and it fits very well.
To start - read The Wars of the Jews.

Deborah13, It was Matthew Henrys commentary. Perhaps not the exact commentary that you referenced to me, but it was Matthew Henry. I have read other things of MH's and perhaps I was thinking of one of those when I said what I did. I know it was him.
Sorry Edward, I don't remember what you are referring to.
:rolling I must be getting my threads mixed up, lol. It must've been the end times thread which is similar. We were talking about the AOD and you said how they put the statue of Zeus in the temple and referred me to read MH's commentary of it on BibleGateway and I responded with a long post about it and you said that that's not what MH's commentary said. It may have been his book and not the commentary I got my info from. I don't remember now. You should see my pile of Notes. I need a secretary just for those let alone keeping track of threads, lol.

You quoted "Mark 13:7 "And when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be ye not troubled: for shuch things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet."

"The end" refers to Jerusalems destruction!
