I’m hoping to have a good discussion about the subject of sanctification, and how it pertains to our salvation.



Let’s start with what sanctification means.


Sanctification is the process by which we become pure, holy, and set apart for the Lord.


Sanctification; Strongs G38 - hagiasmos


The KJV translates Strong's G38 in the following manner: holiness (5x), sanctification (5x).


  1. consecration, purification
  2. the effect of consecration
    1. sanctification of heart and life


Here are the 10 verses where this word appears in the New Testament, 5 are rendered as holiness, and 5 as sanctification.

I pulled these from the Strongs so they are in the KJV.



Rom 6:19 - I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Rom 6:22 - But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

1Co 1:30 - But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

1Th 4:3 - For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

1Th 4:4 - That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

1Th 4:7 - For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

1Pe 1:2 - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.



Do we believe as a Christian community that God’s plan of salvation for our lives and family, involves sanctification?
 
Sanctification is the work of grace at salvation that sets the believer apart or declares one holy unto God as being purified and approved of God unto good works that we should walk in according to His will He set forth before the foundation of the world.

God speaking to Jeremiah - Jeremiah 1:4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

God speaking to all of us - Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Amen, and yes, He saved us and called us to be his own people, not because of what we have done, but because of his own purpose and grace. 2 Timothy 1:9

Sanctification of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit works in us the divine character that God has ordained, and the fruit of the Spirit—the love, and the joy, and the peace—become our portion. Paul’s thanksgiving for the Thessalonian Christians is because God has chosen them to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit. The Comfort Of The Believer:

I thought that we are sanctified which leads to sanctification.

Romans 15:16
16 that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Santctified is to be set apart and made holy.
Then sanctification is the process of walking in holiness as a result of being set apart.

Peter said "It is written, be Holy Just as I am Holy"

So I see sanctification as the process of having been justified and sanctified.

It's a process of walking after the spirit so that people see Jesus in us.

I think that Gods plan for salvation (from the beginning of time) was set in place and fulfilled on the cross. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

And as a result of faith in him we are saved.
This salvation then evidences itself in our walk.

Amen.


As in all of the things that pertain to this life of godliness, there is the delicate balance of our effort to cooperate with His grace to accomplish His will and purpose in being transformed into the image of His Son.


Peter says it this way -


Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 1 Peter 1:22


  • you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit


This says we purify our souls in obedience to the truth, by means of His Spirit; The Spirit of grace.


It’s by His grace we are enabled in this work of sanctification...

In this work of becoming sons. John 1:12


Nevertheless we must do the work of obeying.



Paul teaches us this principle -


For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:13-14


  • if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.


It is by the power of the Spirit, working in harmony with us, to put forth the effort of mortifying the sinful deeds of the flesh.

This simply means not allowing the flesh to manifest its lustful cravings of sexual immorality, stealing, lying, and so forth through our physical body.


This is what it means to be “under grace”.

We are under obligation to obey grace; The Spirit of grace.

To be led by the Spirit, rather than being led by the desires of the flesh, in which we become the slave of sin again.

His will is definitely for “this salvation to evidence itself in our walk.”


However, it’s a process... a process of becoming the righteousness of God in Christ.


For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that
we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21


  • Of becoming sons of God.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power
to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12


  • Of becoming transformed into the image of His Son.


I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2

Can born again Christians become “unsanctified”, or defiled; unclean ?

The scripture says that the inward man is renewed day by day (is renewed by denying self and tasking up the Cross daily [2 Cor. 4:16; Lk. 9:23-24]). This is not a act of labor but an act of Faith, by placing and maintaining our Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross daily. [Gal. 2:20-21].

The sin nature has been separated, not eliminated in a Christian life. This evil nature is always present in our current bodies. Victory only comes by Faith in Christ and the Cross. We must acknowledge that we need the GRACE of God to overcome the sins we repeat. The operation of the Holy Spirit is accomplished through Faith and Grace.

Every failure in a Christian life is caused by us resulting to the flesh and trying to do what needs to be done by the means of the flesh, which is guaranteed to fail. When the Believer attempts to function outside of the Cross, the situation becomes impossible. Sin and failure are the constant results, no matter how hard one may try otherwise.

Sanctification is not automatic. We enter into sanctification by the Believers Faith placed and maintained exclusively in Christ [Who He Is] and the Cross of Calvary where the victory was won [what He has done] (Hebrews 11:6). This is called the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus - Romans 8:2. This allows the Holy Spirit to baptize the Believer into the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, so that the life of Christ is manifested through the power of the Holy Spirit in the Believers life [it is His life that brings the victory - not ours] Matthew 5:8, John 1:12, John 14:21, Romans 6:3-5, Galatians 2:20-21, 2 Corinthians 4:11
 
Sanctifying peace allows the Holy Spirit to deliver the Believer into the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, so that the life of Christ is manifested and lived through the Believer by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a living sacrifice that is pleasing and acceptable to God (Matthew 5:8; John 14:21; Romans 8:2, 13; 2 Corinthians 4:11; Galatians 2:20-21).

The majority of Christians know nothing about the Cross of Christ for sanctification. Justification delivers us from the penalty of sin, while sanctification delivers us from the power of sin. The Cross of Christ is as necessary for sanctification as it is for salvation (1 Cor. 1:18).

The sin nature is a result of the Fall. When the believing sinner comes to Christ, the sin nature is made ineffective (Rom. 6:6). It will remain ineffective if the believer maintains unceasing Faith in Christ and the Cross (Rom. 6:1-14). If the believer ceases to look to Christ and the Cross, but rather makes something else the object of his faith—no matter how good the something else might be—the Holy Spirit will not function in such an atmosphere. He demands exclusively that our Faith be in Christ and the Cross (Rom. 8:1-2,11). If faith is moved to something else, the believer will find himself once again being ruled by the sin nature. That's why Paul said, "Neither yield you your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin (the sin nature): but yield yourselves unto God (which refers to God's Way, which is Christ and the Cross)" (Rom. 6:3-5, 13). Otherwise, the sin nature will rule the believer.

We submit to God by the Plan He has provided, which is the Cross. We resist the Devil by strictly looking to Christ, and what He has done for us at the Cross, where Satan was totally defeated (Colossians 2:14-15).

Everything we receive from the Lord, including Sanctification, is a work of Grace. Grace is simply the Goodness of God extended to undeserving people. the whole process is by Faith, as the whole process can only be by Faith.
