SOME TALK THE TALK, BUT MAY STUMBLE WALKING THE TALK

A man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection with him. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.

The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping the guy off in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do" bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker and the chrome-plated fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car."

I don't think there is a Christian alive that has not been guilty of what you are highlighting. We can start with Peter and work our way to the very last one before the second coming.

We're human.

in terms of talking, the less of it one does, the less trouble to get into.

Proverbs 24:16

Driving a car is of the devil. ;) It brings out the worst in people.
My father, a very calm and friendly person, can go so nuts in his car when the car in front of him isn't driving "fast enough" or whatever minor or imagined traffic violation they commit in his perception. And it's not just my father, quite a number of otherwise peacefull people are like that.
I know this is about stumbling over sin as a christian and not about driving misconduct, but I really think there's something about car driving that tempts us all to commit the sin of wrath.

Guilty, but more so when someone cuts me off or in the event of a near accident. My adrenalin shoots through the roof and I yell, well, normally "you stupid idiot" which probably makes me guilty of hellfire since it pretty much equals "you fool". Then it takes about a half hour for me to return to my right mind and realize that I may inadvertantly be guilty of doing the same thing to others if I don't see the hazard.
We don't put Christian bumper stickers on our cars anymore. Not even a fish. It is bad enough to shame Jesus much less to represent Him in that way.

A few times we have passed someone walking on the sidewalk and my brother stuck his head out the window yelling "Put a shirt on, idiot!" Couldn't help but laugh each time, but it was still something you shouldn't do.

In all honesty, I am probably the world's worst. I embarrass my wife to no end, and almost always get a lecture from her. I comment on people talking, acting, or dressing stupid, and 98% of the time it just rolls right off my tongue. I did it 3 times today in Kroger, as an unfortunate matter of fact.

I saw an 18 or 19 year old girl wearing shorts my 7 year old wouldn't fit into. I walked by her and said, "You need to go put some clothes on."

Then I saw a younger guy walking around with his jeans around his knees and his boxers up to his belly button. I'm not exaggerating, I could almost see his legs in the space between boxers and jeans. He looked around and made the briefest eye-contact with me, which is when I said, "I don't want to see your underwear, and you ain't no gangster. Pull your pants up." He did, and walked away swinging his legs out 2 feet wider than most people to keep his pants from falling again.

Then someone was driving the wrong way down the parking lane I was in and came just a few inches from hitting me. I yelled, "Those arrows aren't just suggestions, moron!"

Now, I'm not of the mind that we should say everything softly and gently, or that we should sugar-coat. Jesus Himself wasn't always polite (look how many times he called people 'fool', and He even called Peter Satan). But at the same time, every time I do that I think, "There was probably a better way to say that. Maybe 'please' or something like that would be a good place to start."

God bless my wife, that's what she puts up with every day, and she is forever trying to help me quit. One of these days, I'll finally start listening.

Because if I don't, she'll beat me half to death with her granny's wooden spoon.

I won't go into the many many many many ordeals I have to deal with as a truck driver and other drivers on the road. But very briefly I will say that I'm cut off EVERYDAY, people slam their breaks on in front of me EVERYDAY, people speed past me as if I'm standing still, people pull in front of me with no turn signals etc etc etc.. But in it all, the Lord has given me a lot of patience on the road over the years. So I'm not like most of you on the road lol. I usually just slow down, take my time. I'm in no hurry, life is good, plus I'm always listening to my audio Bible and if I'm in a hurry I might get there before my Chapter is done.. I can't have that!

EDIT: You know you're in no hurry if the school buses are passing you lol

That is a great idea! I have GOT to get me one of those!

Oh Matthew they are a great thing to own. I listen to the Word everyday. I just got my Old Testament in last week and last week I went through the first five books of the Bible. Tonight I start in the Book of Judges and I'm looking forward to it.. Joshua just died in the Book of Joshua, so we'll see where the story picks up tonight.. I can't wait! I listen to the Bible for basically 8-10hrs a day five days a week and then repeat it. I've listened to the New Testament 8x in the past month and half.. Thus the reason I had to get a Old Testament.

If interested go here.. I got mine shipped in under a week.. Not a bad price either, they are on sale right now..

Thanks so much, I'm going to check it out now!

I don't suffer from road rage. I am that idiot driver who is causing you all to go crazy.

No worry, I am in my own little world with the music blasting pretending I am 21 on the dance floor. I am probably singing to the top of my lungs dancing in the car as much as possible. I am not paying any attention to you or anyone else on the road. :wave

So you are endangering yourself. But at least you gonna die singing and dancing. :lol

I know you are all talking about road rage and stuff and and I am guilty of that too. I also realize I am late in the convo, but I had something to share. I can identify myself with the woman in the story sometimes. Not because of the road rage, but because, honestly, if it wasnt because I tell people i go to church and I am a Christian, people would not really know that I am one, unless they happen to turn on my car's radio (which is always set on 90.9 - A Christian Station), or if the topic comes up in a convo. My point is. I think we should strive to be more known as people of God. Today I witnessed this in a 17 year old boy. He wrote a song for God and sang it at his senior recital and dedicated to Him in front of everyone. Not only that, but at his school, everyone knows he is a Christian. I just wish that we could all have that innocence and not be carried away by all the things we have to face daily that take away from the character we should be portraying. And btw..

I think the idea of the audio Bible is great! :)

.

I believe the car and traffic is the perfectl testing ground for growing in the Fruits of Spirit in terms of Galations 5:22-23 "But the Spirit produce love(ie respect other road users) , joy(being a saved Christain and a member of God's family, obvious to others), peace (smiling at a grumpy driver), patience(when an old car breaks down and you cant pass or you are behind a smokey truck on a mountain pass on a blind rise) , kindness(helping someone with engine problem or phoning for help) , goodness(paying traffic violation ticket), faithfulness(waving at traffic official thanking him for his patience) , humility(saying sorry when you have made a blunder),self-controll(say no more).

If we pass these little tests and ask God's forgiveness on a daily basis then I believe we are on the right road in becoming like Christ through the Spirit.Thats when I believe we are walking the talk. There is no limitation in asking God's forgiveness for the same mistakes .That I am aware of.

Yep, very well said. :yes

And don't get me started about how using public transportation is a test for the Fruits of the Spirit. When you're crowded tightly with a bunch of strangers in a bus, especially in summer when it's all hot and sweaty and oxygene is rare keeping one's aggression under control is an arduous trial. :lol The 7:11 am bus from my village to downtown is the advanced version of the trial. Honestly, I fail it every morning.

Let's be honest, most of us men need a woman in our lives to civilize us.
