In all seriousness what do you want for CHRISTmas other than material things?

I want the reason for the season to be brought back instead of commercialism. I want the LORD to make us all realize this. If there are verses that show us the reason for the season, I would like to read them. I know the story of Jesus. Luke 2:1-20. But any other verses would be helpful.

And of course what you want for CHRISTmas as well. God bless you all.

I don't know if they took me seriously but every year, the Christmas materialism gets to me so this year I told my family that I do not want or need anything for Christmas. I told them that if they want to give me a gift then take the money they would spend on me and give it to a charity of their choice. If it's important to them then they can do it in my name but that is not required. I just don't want to receive any material gifts. I've got anything I might need or want and then some.

So, when is Christ's official birthday?

I think gift giving can be good, if its sincere and thoughtful. The problem is that Christmas is so over-the-top commercialized. I don't really want anything but, odds are pretty good that my parents and a few friends will hook me up with stuff, anyway.

I wish we could get back to maybe a few thoughtful presents, family time, all that. Unfortunately, I don't think that'll happen for most people anytime soon.

The Bible says nothing about christmas. And the mentioning of shepards in the fields is an indication against december, or any winter month.

There is no mention of christmas celebration until 400 or so AD. The date was most likely chosen to "occupy" the heathen winter solstice celebration.

I'm going to celebrate it. Next September 1st FOR ME is going to be the date that I celebrate Christ's birthday. I know we need to celebrate every day, but I feel that FOR ME putting aside one special day is a good way to focus totally on HIM. every other day, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life.

While your intentions are honorable, you can't bring Christ back into a holiday the Christians technically stole from the pagans. For example, there's no shortage of Wiccan articles about the yule season, and you can't tell such people from those who celebrate Christmas because except for the nativity, the decorations are all the same, they celebrate and exchange gifts like everyone else! (except they celebrate 3 days earlier on the solstice).

If you need to know, Christ was born in September, at new moon the feast of Trumpets. I have done extensive calculation and biblical research where I know the birth date and death date to the very day. But the point I'm making is not to relate it to the Gregorian calendar, but rather there were "set times" feasts that Yahweh gave to the children of Israel, and they all point to the redemptive work of Christ --- I think that's all one needs to acknowledge and not worrying about bringing the so-called Christmas season back.

I rather enjoy buying presents for my friends that I know they'll enjoy.


While I have to admit that I enjoy receiving presents as well (I'm human after all), more stuff to clutter up my house is the last thing I need.

Claudya's right. We don't know when Jesus was born but it is very doubtful it was in December, and the true original "reason for the season" was actually a pagan holiday! But with that being said, I have no problem with celebrating Jesus' birth on December 25th, and I have no problem with the idea that there may have been a pagan holiday celebrated at the same time that Christians have usurped to celebrate Jesus' birth. When I celebrate Christmas, I celebrate the fact that Jesus was born at all and the exact date of his birth is irrelevant to me. And to me a celebration involves other people to share it with, so for me it would be pointless and really pretty weird to try to celebrate Christmas on some day other than December 25th!

As for the commercialization, I completely agree with WIP on the extreme this has become. I too told folks a few years ago not to give me gifts anymore, but just to celebrate Jesus' birth with me instead. For several years now I haven't received any gifts and I spend Christmas with Christian friends. I don't miss the gifts. Of course, being true to the concept I also don't give gifts to others (and that is probably the real reason they don't give me any!) so if there is any material thing that I want, rather than hoping someone gives it to me I simply buy it with the money I saved be not partaking in all the hyper-commercialism.

When Christmas fell on a Sunday recently I was astonished that so many of the local churches in my area cancelled their Sunday morning worship services! The reasoning among the pastors and elders was that people aren't going to get up and go to church on Christmas morning because they'll all be too busy with "family stuff" which I think was really code for "sobering up from the night before and serving the god of wrapped presents". It was shameful! I just couldn't believe how many of them did this! But there was at least one church (one that I know of anyway) that rightly saw the stupidity of this and continued with their service. They set an all time record attendance that was WAY past the previous record!

The church I grew up in would have services Christmas Eve night and Christmas morning. We had not problem with it. We just planned around it. We would open family gifts quickly in the morning before getting ready for the service, then when we got home we would prepare for having extended family over. It became quite a full day.
