Why aren't Christians defeating the pornographers?

According to a report by Dame Rachel de Souza (the UK's Children's Commissioner), 10% of 9 year olds have seen pornography. She also says there is evidence that shows a link between young people watching porn and incidents of child on child sexual abuse. In her words: "I am categorically clear: no child should be able to access or watch pornography." A study by Bernardo's found that more than half of child sexual abuse cases in the UK are perpetrated by children (2022 - up from a third in 2013).

Over a dozen states in the US have declared porn a public health crises.

According to Fight the New Drug:
Decades of studies from respected institutions have demonstrated significant impacts of porn consumption for individuals, relationships, and society. 73% of teens have seen porn. At least 1 in 3 porn videos show sexual violence of aggression. 53% of boys and 39% of girls believe pornography is a realistic depiction of sex. Porn consumers tend to be less satisfied in relationships, less committed, and more permissive of cheating. There is virtually no way to guarantee that pornographic content is consensual. Exploitation and trafficking are common experiences in the porn industry.

Why has there not been a concerted push back by Christians (who number some 2.38 billion people according to PEW research) against the pornographic industry? NCOSE (National Centre on Sexual Exploitation) began as a Christian movement and have had some limited success.

At the sermon on the mount Jesus said:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Ellicott's commentary on this use of 'salt of the earth' states:
The words are spoken to the disciples in their ideal character, as the germ of a new Israel, called to a prophetic work, preserving the earth from moral putrescence and decay. The general reference to this antiseptic action of salt is enough to give an adequate meaning to the words...

At the very least, adults are failing to protect children from seeing this material - surely a damning indictment? We are failing because we could have made sure children were protected from seeing it BEFORE we allowed porn to be as accessible as it is. Anyone accessing porn (whether they are Christian or not) is fuelling the industry and may end up actually watching someone being raped.

Porn is damaging the whole of society - not just our children.

I will add that I am not pointing the finger at everyone but myself - on the contrary, I point at all of us.

Hi Wheat Field
Porn is damaging the whole of society - not just our children.
Yes, porn, adultery, stealing, lying and denying God for who He is are sins that are damaging the whole of society. Friend, it's sin. It isn't porn alone. There is a multitude of sinful activities that damage our society. Lottery gambling takes more money from the poor who really can't afford such wasteful excess... but it is what it is. It's sin!! It's all about sin. It will always and forever be about sin.

So yes, we can stand up and shake our fists at pornography, and certainly God's children should not be a part of it. We can stand up and shake our fist at our justice department that they let murderers walk free and we don't even consider something as wicked as adultery to even be illegal in most cases. But look. It's what Paul and Jesus and many of the disciples wrote to us about... the world is heading to destruction and neither christians, Buddhists, or atheists are going to stop that or even put a dent in it as it rolls over all of us leading into the very last of the last days. Where Jesus told us it's going to be bad! It will be a time of persecution such as has ever existed on the whole of the earth since before time began.

Friend, God's word is true. Though you are not a believer, I'd encourage you to read it! It tells you and warns you about all these issues that you're having problems with and think to yourself, "Well, if there really was a God... He'd fix it. If those folks are God's people then they should be fixing it." No! That's not what the Scriptures tell us to be doing.

We're to talk to people such as yourself and try to explain that God can be tested. You can know that there is a God in heaven. You can know it without the shadow of a doubt in your heart that God is and that He has a Son. That this marvelous creator God, loves you and wants only what is good for you. It isn't going to become all good in this lifetime, however. Here, we have to struggle along with all the sinners. But there will be completely different.

It's all in God's word. You can read it and know that all these perils and catastrophes that come from our sinfulness are only going to get worse. The Scriptures give no indication that our plight with sin will disappear this side of Jesus' reign. But they do tell us how to live as we sojourn to that great promise of our God and Creator. We are to live apart from them as far as doing the things that they do. That's it.

So, go ahead and mount your quest. Rid the world of pornography. But you know what? If you don't them tell them about Jesus, you won't have saved a single soul in your victory. But as a non-believer, that's not really what your quest is about now, is it? May I ask? What is it that you think you will do by shutting down PornHub? Will that stop all the pornography on the net? And please, don't get me wrong, It would be a wonderful thing if we didn't have digital pornography available 24/7 via the net. But that isn't going to happen. You might put the name 'PornHub' out of business, but you won't make any noticeable dent in the plethora of porn available through the net.

This is where God asks us not to live as they live.

God bless,
Ted

For the same reason that there's no concerted push back by Christians against anything. We're living in hard times created by weak men. Most Christians themselves are regularly watching porn. Everyone has to come to their own conclusion that pornography is fake and harmful, its appeal to their mind must be loosened.
