I hate it when people think the best way to deal with an unwanted pet is to drop it off in the country.

We have 5 cats and they hardly get along with each other, territorial issues crop up between them from time to time and they've lived here for years with each other.

So, I get home today to find that someone dropped a cat off. Way out here in the middle of nowhere. So now, we either have to find a home for it or put it down ourselves. My dear daughter has already made a pet out of it, it's very sweet and friendly, not too mention somewhat scared and certainly confused.

Tomorrow, I'll be calling the shelters to see if anyone will take it, but most aren't taking cats or any animals unless the police take them in, so that will probably be a bust.

If we can't find a home, her dad will have to shoot the poor thing and she'll be so upset.

I hate it when I go to read meters and people seem to make their dogs mean. a dog is a reflection of lack of or care of the animal by the owner. I understand the guard dog deal but some of them are too much.

That's really messed up, there aren't any shelters in your area that will take cats? I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it is definitely not the right way to deal with an unwanted pet. Whoever owned the cat should have put out an ad in a local newspaper or something. I guess you could do that too instead of putting the poor cat down.

I hate it too! Poor animals being put down ... ticks me off! I could ramble but I'll spare you all.

Well, kitty has a reprise, sort of... A friend of Viola's has said she would take the cat but she can't take him for another month yet.

I'm going to call the shelter in the morning and see if they will accept taking him in on a short term basis, for just the month. They did this with our cat Snowball, there were extenuating circumstances... perhaps they'll do the same for this guy whom Viola has temporarily named "Lemon" after the color of his eyes. He's a sweet cat, but he's very vocal and really, really, REALLY, wants to go to his home. It's aggravating that people would just dump him out here. But, the shelters are so full because so many people have had to move because of losing their homes. They simply are not taking in animals unless the police bring them in. Correction... they do take in animals... it's just that they are always so full up that there is no room except for the slots alloted for the police. It's the same reason why it's so hard to find homes for any lost or abandoned animal... so many people are giving up their animals anyone willing to take one, already has one.

I know it seems horrible of us to shoot the poor thing, but believe me, that's better than facing what he would face out here where there are many predators who would be more than happy to eat him alive. We'll do whatever we can for the cat and if we can't find a home for him, at least we can make sure he doesn't starve to death, or suffer the pain and terror of being caught by a coyote, wolf, bear, mountain lion or even an eagle. He's just a little house cat... he isn't capable of living in the wild.

I'm really hopeful though, that as long as T is willing to take him after a month (when she moves into her pet friendly apartment) the shelter (or someone else) will be willing to take him in on a temp basis.

I just wish that people would realize that pets are like kids... you should only have them if you're willing to provide for their needs and give them love and affection for the long haul...

People have this mistaken belief that mr kitty or doggy can survive on his/her own out in the great wild, that it's better than taking them to the shelter 'cause the shelter is just going to kill them. They don't realize that mr kitty or doggy is likely dead anyway as coyote, wolves, and other assorted carnivores are out there waiting for a tasty snack like a confused house pet on their own for the first time. If mr kitty or doggy manages to avoid getting eaten, there's no food bowl to hunt food from ... and they've been eating from that food bowl since birth with no real practical hunting expertise. Those that don't adapt will die a slow, painful death of starvation.

Tell me how that's better for mr kitty or doggy.

The selfish souls who do that to their furry friend probably don't want to turn them into the shelter 'cause then the shelter will have a record of abandonment. :tongue
