The = signs are not actually equal signs. They are just dividers. These are not math equations, they are patterns.

F is always double the first #.

Y is calulated as: ( (the first column) X (the first column) ) - (the second column)
(In the first row -x is the same as -1x)

X is 1 because anything multiplied by 1 is that number.

Hopefully my explanation makes sense.

You are incredible.:thumbsup

Here's one for you, Classic:

6÷2(1+2) = ?

P.S. This is not debatable. There is one and only one correct answer.

Alexis Sanchez :thumbsupAlexis Sanchez :thumbsup
Yes, the correct answer is "Alexis Sanches" But you forgot to ring your buzzer, Classik. Indeed that was his Double Jeopardy question to the answer that won him a chance to move on to Final Jeopardy where the subject was, "Answers that do not relate," and the Final Jeopardy question, "Alex, what is a non-sequitur?"

Classik - Did you come up with that yourself? Just coming up with that puzzle seems like a challenge in itself.

I see it, good job. Thanks!

Classic I think it is time for the mathematicians here to give you a mathemametical problem to solve..Where is tim-from_pa? :)
Been there, done that...
I asked Classik a classic question:
Here's one for you, Classik:

6÷2(1+2) = ?

He replied, "Alexis Sanchez :thumbsup"
(no joke, that's what he said)

Thank you! I sometimes (oftentimes) need a picture and like the "coloring book edition" for these things!

You still get the classic "boink" though:

Want the bonus question? Why is it that we can not consider the problem as:

6 / [2(1+2)] = 1

Alexis Sanchez is (I see it now) the only true answer, but why?

Here's the YouTube about 'dat:

Stephen, a Yahoo contributor and college Professor with his Doctorate in Mathematics has replied:

Stephen from Yahoo said:
The problem as it is written is 6÷2(1+2) , the ÷ cannot be substituted with a fraction bar because they have different ranks on the order of operations. It is an illegal math move to do this. The bar ranks with parentheses, ÷ is interchangeable with *. therefore the problem must be solved as 6÷2(1+2) NOT 6 (over) 2(1+2) we do the parentheses first, so 6÷2(3), the parentheses are now no longer relevant, because the number inside is in it's simplest form. Every single number has implied parentheses around it.
  • 6÷2(3)
  • (6) ÷(2)(3)
  • 6÷2*3,
or even converting the division to multiplication by a reciprocal (a legal math move)
  • (6)(1 (over) 2)(3)
Are all correct ways to write this problem and mean exactly the same thing. Using pemdas, where md and as are interchangeable, we work from left to right, so (3)(3) or
3*3= 9

Just because something is implied rather than written does not give it any special rank in the order of operations.

The problem in it's simplest form, with nothing implied would look like this:
(1+1+1+1+1+1 (over) 1) ÷ (1+1 (over) 1) * ((1(over) 1) + (1+1 (over) 1))
From here, nothing is implied, This again, works out to 9.

If the symbol '/' was used this whole debate would be ambiguous since that symbol can mean "to divide by" or it could mean a fraction bar.

HOWEVER, because the ÷ symbol is used, it can not be changed to mean a fraction bar because that would change the order of operations and thus the whole problem, you can't change a symbol to mean something because you want to, in doing so you are changing the problem.

Once and for all, the answer is ALEX SANCHEZ!.

Of course, I took a little liberty with the last two words...

Half a generation ago, the correct and only answer would have been Diego Maradona.
A generation and a half ago, it would have been Pele.
Now, apparently, it is Alex Sanchez.
My question: Why couldn't the answer by Kei Kamara?
