I guess I should have specified, " as per the new covenant."
Watchman
About the new covenant and "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness." That was a covenant of faith, unilateral, meaning God entered in to this covenant with Abraham with no conditions added to it. There was no I will do this if you do that, as there was with the covenant with Israel. The NT tells us that Jesus is the fullfillment of that covenant with Abraham. (IF you are not familiar with those passages let me know and I will find them but no time at the moment). It is what all the parts of the worship ceremonies in Israel were pointing to. Jesus.

The aspect of understanding Salvation I'd like to start with is with a question.

Does salvation, ( defined as having received the Spirit of Christ) happen in one moment of time ( believe and recieve ) , or is it a process?

Without getting into the OSAS doctrine, what is your understanding? Moment of time, or s process?
a process, Revelation 2:10; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Matthew 10:22 and this process requires endurance and patience Mark 13:13; Luke 21:19; Hebrews 6:12; James 1:12

I think it is a process. Just declaring Jesus as lord and saying the sinners prayer is easy. The sinners prayer is the declaration but the process of actually being saved continues from that.

May I ask why you didn't choose being saved by grace, or being saved by believing, or being saved in baptism, or being saved by inviting Jesus into your heart?

There are so many different ways of salvation taught today, I was honestly wondering what brought you to your choice?

God bless

This is a good question. I believe we should all have a common understanding that there is salvation as in being born again, or regenerated. Which I tend to refer to as “initial salvation” or what is known as salvation by faith.

Then there is receiving the salvation of our souls, at the end of our faith, or as an end result of our faith; ie keeping the faith, or enduring to the end. This is where we receive on the Day of Judgement. Such phrases as “inherit eternal life“ or the “hope of salvation” or the “hope of eternal life” point to this.

This verse actually contains both “initial salvation“, as well as it refers to the “hope of eternal life“.

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7

Initial Salvation; regeneration, born again.
  • not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

Receiving the salvation of our soul; inheriting eternal life
  • that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

So we see there is being saved by grace through faith.
Saved in the past.

We continue to be saved, as we continue to believe.
Saved in the present.

We have the hope of eternal life to come.
Future salvation; receiving the salvation of our soul.

whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:8-9

  • receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Abraham's justification was a process, Gen 12:1 to Gen 22:12 not a faith only, mental acknowledgement occurrence that happened at one moment in time for all time . Salvation for us today is a process...belief...repentance...confession and baptism.

“ Anybody that ASKS to be Saved WILL BE SAVED”. Nobody will sincerely “ ask” to be Saved until they see The NEED to be Saved........” Nobody comes to the Father, lest the Sprit draw him”......The Spirit “ draws men” by the Conviction Of Sin....As in the examples of “Lydia, the seller of purple” and even Peter.....It all starts with God— NOT us! God has to “open the heart”, to make it receptive to the Gospel......God Bless.... ?
