I had to go on a Facebook break. I had been seeing a trend of "look how much I tithe, look how much I pray" type posting and decided to post a status about how the pharisee spirit is still alive today and we shouldn't use social network as a personal pedestal of self glory and exaltation.

I was basically told that I had a demon operating inside of me. Passive aggressive posting is not of God, it was said. The Spirit convicts in a way that doesn't hurt us, just reminds us.

Lately, Facebook has been full of stuff like this for me. And yesterday, after that, I was overwhelmed with the feeling that it is no longer beneficial for me, its detrimental to my spirit life... I spend too much time on it. I'd been watching trends evolve in the modern pentecostal church that unsettled me. Suddenly, everyone is a prophet. Everyone is an apostle. Everyone is declaring what God is doing "in this season." No one is struggling. I value transparency, and it would do me a lot better sometimes to hear from folks, "I'm struggling! I'm battle worn!" I'm so tired of masks. We all want the appearance of all is well.

Then I guess we all have a demon inside us lol we all end up having opinions my goodness.Yeah stuff like that and other things is why I got off there too for quite a while then created a completely new one few months ago that is private and I only have 4 people on my friendslist,the ones Im closest to my 2 brothers,my best friend geovanny and my a new good friend who I run a FB page with.I have a different name on there and I even went ahead and preblocked certain people from even finding me.Ive enjoyed it since but its because now its nothing but positive and fun.Well I do get private messages when things are hard or bad for them but we share those times together I know I can be fragile and broken with them as well.

I pretty much gave facebook a break too, lol. So no ones struggling in this economy?! Oh, they are but are not complaining as much recently. Well good, then I'm not alone, lol. I try not to complain about my situation anymore because we were instructed to be content and not be murmuring. Maybe others are catching on to this teaching also? That's a good thing brother. Awhile back, that's all there was on FB was people complaining.

It seems "the Facebook experience" really does depend on who is on your friends list. That's what determines what you see and if your "friends" are negative and hateful, you see negativity and hate. If your friends are the kind of people you like and agree with (as on HallowBonnie's new page), the experience is a lot nicer. For me, it doesn't bother me much what other people say (as long as they aren't attacking me!) and I kind of like seeing those things as a reminder of what kind of world we really live in. So I rarely block or unfriend anyone and rarely refuse a friend request. (Well, except for the friend requests from the 21 year old girls that I don't know, have never seen before, never talked to, and have pages showing them in their bikinis with friends lists that consist of nothing but a bunch of aging guys that I also don't know. ) But even for me, I've had to block a couple of people here and there when they decided to come after me personally. I've found it to be somewhat similar to the real world. When I run across someone who treats me bad, I avoid them in the future. When I pass by someone and hear them talking to someone else and acting poorly, I listen and learn by example of how NOT to be. Facebook can be an interesting place.

And that! That's another good reason to go on Facebook! I don't have any great grandkids, but I like seeing all the pictures of friends' kids, grandkids, and great grandkids!

I think whatever church is teaching that stuff isn't of god. how can an entire church have a bunch of prophets and apostles? we aren't all called to the same or gifted the same.

I don't blame you, Blake, I have taken many breaks from FB for various reasons. I first joined to see what my kids were up to but they wouldn't let me friend them so that was pointless. Now, they never, ever go on, so I had to have a new motivator. I enjoy keeping up with old/new friends and family. I live far from extended family so it's nice to keep in touch that way. I keep it superficial and avoid commenting on anything political or anything that looks like it's going to turn ugly.

Talking about all the prophets, I knew of a woman who spent BIG bucks to become a 'Prophet In Training.' Her fee included classes, dream interpretation, reading stars and weather reports, etc. There were also special seminars she could attend, but at additional fees.

So sad.

Her course also pre-dated Bentley's arrival to the US from Canada. She didn't do so well in the course.... everything was done in such generalities that the 'prophecies' could have been meant for any time, any where. Nothing specific.

To me this is the very reason why i don't have a facebook page. For me there is nothing of value, except my children and grandchildren, but i can use other ways to stay in touch with them.

There's only one person on my FB that is like that. But I only have 28 friends.

It seems when I am asked to volunteer for large events, I end up with a ton of friend's requests, it's a blessing while we are working together on a project, but when the project is over and several months pass, you never stay connected with them, so a person could end up having 100's of friends, but not really know many. I would rather have a few loyal, faithful friends.

I have a friend who started a Christian organization about 20 years ago and one of her interview questions is "how many close friends do you have?", she is convinced those who say just a handful or less, will make the best employee and will be more faithful and loyal to their mission. Of course, this is her opinion but I thought it interesting. They help homeless women and children and their tract record is 100% success, so she's doing something right.

The idea of the number of close friends a person has originally came from a psychologist that studied it. I can't remember who it was anymore, a friend told me about it many years ago when he'd learned about it in a college class. The idea was that at the end of life if a person could count 5 people that were true close friends to them during their life, they should consider themself lucky. All the other people they knew in their lifetime were, at best, acquaintances and many were only there as long as they could gain something from the person.

I think what your friend with the homeless company is looking at is a person's ability and desire to look at the things of life in a realistic and analytical way in their own lives as well as the lives of others, searching below the surface for the deeper and more important reasons for the situations the people are in. Most people who do this, do it out of a desire to better those lives they are looking at and also tend to take on jobs that they can dedicate themselves to for more than just the immediate rewards of a paycheck. With her company's track record it seems it's working for her too!
