[__ Science __ ] Where Did the Idea of Multiple “Higher and Lower Races” Come From?

Racism, as we know it in the United States, was based on slavery, specifically African people who were enslaved and their labor stolen by the people who "owned" them.

Even after the Civil War, racists continued to find ways to keep black citizens from enjoying the same rights as other Americans.

Darwin outraged creationists by arguing that if you brought "savages" to England, in a few generations, they'd be just like Englishmen. (The Descent of Man)

Since evolutionary theory has shown that there are no biological human races, most biologists reject racism outright. Many evangelicals have also rejected racism; the Southern Baptist Convention, decades ago, officially apologized to black Americans for supporting slavery and segregation in the past, a very Christian and courageous thing to do.

Unfortunately, there's still a problem with racism in America.

, a new federal intelligence bulletin points to white supremacists and other would-be domestic terrorists as the main problem lurking behind potentially lethal violence.
...
It says would-be domestic terrorists “including militia extremists and [groups] who advocate a belief in the superiority of the white race have sought to bring about a second civil war, often referred to as a 'Boogaloo' by intentionally instigating violence at First Amendment-protected activities. Racially charged events, coupled with the accompanying widespread media attention, and the rapid dissemination of violent online rhetoric by [extremists], are likely to remain contributing factors to potentially ideologically motivated violence.”

We've come a long way since I was young; we've still got a long way to go.

Yes. Many of the white supremacists call themselves "accelerationists", believing that a race war is inevitable and wanting it to happen soon when they believe whites would have the best chance of winning. This is why they were so often caught infiltrating BLM protests, to incite violence. Thus the "you will not replace us" propaganda being disseminated though social media. Although white supremacists are predominately far-right, Hegelian Dialectic has been embraced by fascists and Marxists alike.

There's abundant evidence for the FBI conclusions, BTW:

The numbers are in.

White supremacists are responsible for the majority of terrorist plots and attacks that occurred during the first eight months of 2020, according to a recent report by the nonpartisan think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Researchers found that white supremacists, anti-government extremists from the violent far-right, and involuntary celibates (incels) carried out 67 percent of all domestic terrorist plots and attacks. Far-left terrorists accounted for 20 percent of the plots and attacks. CSIS analyzed 61 incidents from Jan. 1, 2020 to Aug. 31, 2020.

Terrorism, the report states, is defined by "the deliberate use — or threat— of violence by non-state actors in order to achieve political goals and create a broad psychological impact."

So, incidents like hate crimes or protests and riots (like the racial justice demonstrations we saw this summer after the police killing of George Floyd) didn't factor into the research. Though the researchers acknowledge hate crimes and terrorism can overlap, hate crimes aren't always violent.

In protests for racial justice over the summer, far-right terrorists primarily targeted demonstrators. Some of their tactics included vehicle attacks, which were committed mostly by white supremacists or people who were against the Black Lives Matter movement.

White supremacists and other rightwing extremists have been responsible for 67% of domestic terror attacks and plots so far this year, with at least half of that violence targeting protesters, according to a new analysis from a centrist thinktank.

The report found only a single deadly “far-left” attack in 2020, the shooting of Aaron Danielson, a rightwing activist, by a self-described “anti-fascist” during a protest in Portland this August. Experts on extremism said this was the first killing linked to an anti-fascist in the United States in 25 years.

Violent rightwing actors were responsible for 41 politically motivated attacks and plots this year, while “far-left” actors were responsible for 12, according to analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), who have assembled a database of domestic terror attacks going back to 1994.

Despite the fact that the FBI and Homeland Security acknowledged that white supremacist groups had carried out more violent attacks than any other domestic extremist group over the past 16 years, the recent statement by Don Lemon has drawn much ire and contempt from people across the political spectrum.

“WSEs [White Supremacist Extremists] were responsible for 49 homicides in 26 attacks,” said a May 2017 joint brief from the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. “[M]ore than any other domestic group.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray wrote in August, “But the primary terrorist threat to the homeland today, without question, is homegrown violent extremists. That’s what keeps us up at night—and no doubt many of you, too.”

The article goes on to say that there are more white racist terrorists than any other kind, because there are more whites than any other ethnic group. Which is probably true. White supremacists are a greater threat than other terrorists mostly because there are a lot more of them than there are of other terrorists. We should keep in mind that the fact of more white terrorists than anything else, does not mean that whites are necessarily more prone to violence or terrorism.

BTW what we now call Hegelian dialectic has deep roots in Indo-European cultures. The foundation myths from India to Ireland feature an indigenous population (thesis) the Indo-European intruders (antithesis) and the resulting social meld to produce that nation (synthesis).
