Is there tension between the NT and the OT with regard to sexual immorality?

Could you tell me how this relates to the OP? It remains curious how we read of many, many instances of men sinning in the OT along with God's punishment, yet despite the command not to commit adultery, we do not see the same pattern with polygamy. It's casually stated as if nothing untoward...

Is there tension between the NT and the OT with regard to sexual immorality?

If we assume Paul wrote Hebrews then he commends them and others for their faith. However, Paul also said (quoting from Psalm 14): As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together...

Is there tension between the NT and the OT with regard to sexual immorality?

Thanks for this Free. The problem with linking polygamy with wickedness as with Lamech is that it does not hold for King David. God considered David a 'man after his own heart' who 'had done nothing wrong except in the case of Uriah the Hittite'. Acts 13:22 After removing Saul, he made David...

Is there tension between the NT and the OT with regard to sexual immorality?

According to christianity.com a concubine is defined as: 'A woman acquired by a man as a secondary wife. Her purpose was to provide a male heir in the case of a barren wife, to provide more children in general to enhance the family’s workforce and wealth, and to satisfy the man’s sexual desires...

What are the Christian Addictions that Lead to Sin?

What are the Christian Addictions that Lead to Sin?

Indeed - perhaps it would be worth starting a dedicated thread on it? We know that Jesus considered looking with lust as adultery of the heart - so without explicitly citing pornography as sinful, it's clear that he thought it was. Are you implying that the reason that Christians have not...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

You said that, 'rejecting what Christ taught is the abomination that causes desolation.' How does Matthew 24:15 still make sense if that is correct? “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Interesting thanks - but that still leaves us with no answer, surely? The skeptic will continue to point to these verses and claim them as reason for doubt. Jesus predicted more than the destruction of the temple - he specifically references his return.

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Under Darwinism (and without God) there is no objective standard. I hope it is true but I remain skeptical because of verses like Matthew 24:34 I don't understand how this clarifies Jesus's explicit reference to what surely must be a specific point in time? Unless the apostles or whomever...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Though I remain an unbeliever - I can certainly agree that we are all naturally selfish (though this of course requires an objective standard that only a God could establish). The sacrifice of Jesus as told in scripture (as you allude) to is an inspiring story. I do hope that it is fact. I can...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

I am pretty sure we are on the same page (in the sense that this is the only way to uphold Jesus's divinity and not render him a false prophet). Even so, every time I get to v.34 - Truly, I tell you, this generation shall certainly not pass until all these things have happened - my logical mind...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

I will reply to your previous post o Ted - I am trying to understand your perspective on this. I am still confused though (maybe we all are). Just to be clear - are you saying that the great distress of Mat. 24:21 has already occurred? Jesus clearly links the abomination with such a calamity...

Where in scripture is it defined that way please?

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

I'm not following you Ted. In Matthew 24 we read: “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

If Jesus was referring to the generation that saw the 'abomination that causes desolation' - that they would not pass away till all was fulfilled - then does this not exclude the Dome of the Rock which was originally built in the 7th century AD?

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Surely the specifics Daniel 11:31 is germane? “Forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation”

Presumably the temple needs to be rebuilt before the Dome of the Rock can be considered in such a way?

What are the Christian Addictions that Lead to Sin?

I wonder with some astonishment why that there has not been a concerted push back by Christians (who number some 2.38 billion people according to PEW research) against the pornographic industry. NCOSE (National Centre on Sexual Exploitation) began as a Christian movement and have had some...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Since Jesus talks about, for example, 'when you see the abomination which causes desolation' and that he is responding to his disciples question about the end of the age, then I assume he means mortals.

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Nice post Ted, thanks. I do agree with your take on this - that is, it seems to be the only way to uphold Jesus as divine - that he must be talking about the generation which sees the things thus described. I do speak to God as you describe - though of course I am speaking to the God that I am...
