Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

I have read all three - perhaps you would comment on my: https://christianforums.net/threads/is-matthew-24-34-grounds-for-skepticism.103303/post-1852976

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

I do think this is perhaps the only way that Jesus' integrity can hold. A cursory reading of this chapter (same with Luke 21 and Mark 13) seems to result in the immediate charge that Jesus was clearly wrong. It all comes down to the question of to whom was Jesus referring to in v.34. The skeptic...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

As far as I know, the abomination that causes desolation is defined in Daniel and Jesus names him when he mentions uses this phrase. Daniel 9:27 “He will make a firm covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering. And the abomination...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Thanks miamited. I do understand your point about Isaiah 6:9ff. I do accept that we humans are 'calloused' within and that this may skew our perception of what God (assuming his existence) is saying to us. I am aware of the Daniel 9 prophecy and have studied it quite a bit. If I get a chance...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

The coming of the Son of Man (v.30) is explicitly stated - as is the abomination which causes desolation and the persecution of Christians throughout all the nations. Real events, surely?

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Sorry lastofall, I'm not understanding your point.

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Skeptical about Jesus being who he claimed to be (I'm not a Christian btw). When he said v.24 - Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened - we note that 'these things' includes the coming of the Son of Man when the elect will be gathered.

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

You are affirming that there are no grounds for skepticism?

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Thanks journeyman. I think you are pointing out that it would take more than a few years for the gopsel to be preached to the whole world; is that correct? Further to this would be verse 9: “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

Moses words in Deuteronomy 18:21-22: “But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the Lord?’ If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message. That prophet has spoken...

Is Matthew 24:34 grounds for skepticism?

C.S. Lewis, author and lay Anglican theologian wrote the following (from 'The world's last night and other essays' - 1960): "Say what you like" we shall be told, "the apocalyptic beliefs of the first Christians have been proved to be false. It is clear from the New Testament that they all...

    What is adultery?

Indeed - assuming that the relationship is understood to be exclusive.

    What is adultery?

This is my understanding as well - but it doesn't seem to help in pinning down the meaning of adultery.

    What is adultery?

According to Britannica regarding The Song of Solomon: "...the songs celebrate the joy and goodness of human love between the sexes and the sense of inner fulfilment and harmony with God’s creation that arise from such love." One might ask why would such a book is include in the Tanakh? It...

    What is adultery?

Having sex with someone who is not your wife or husband (and just to clarify - this would include having sex with additional marriage partners).

    What is adultery?

I am impressed that you are honest enough to admit that you as a believer do quite understand this issue either. Though I remain a skeptic, I do ask for understanding as if in prayer.

    What is adultery?

Bump. Is there just simply no easy answer to this? Christians don't know what adultery is? (It is my wish that a satisfactory answer is forthcoming; I'm not in anyway goading or taunting).

    What is adultery?

Thanks for your response hawkman. In Romans 7:3 it is clear that a married woman would be an adulteress if she had sex with another man. It is also clear that this would be the same situation if she married another man whilst still married to her original husband. I don't see how your...
