1 John 2:26-29

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

These are my thoughts please share yours.

26 There are many false teachings out there then as today. Today we focus on the word but then the word was not complete so the word was sent to them and that is what they relied on for the truth they also had the disciple around in those days before the churches had the letters from Paul and others. The letters came along with the gospels because first hand would not last forever. The problem was people of those days would claim they knew Christ but infact they did not ever know Him.

27 The Spirit guides us and teaches us. Today we often rely to much on others to teach us and don't rely on the Spirit to teach us. The disciples relied on the Spirit. The Spirit does not go against the word but always with the word.

28 The childeren were most likely the only ones when this letter was sent that did not live in the time of Jesus. We are to be ready for the Lord to come back.

29 Jesus was righteous and we are to follow after His likeness. We may not be perfect but we our to different than the world for us to be able to shine the light we are given thru the Spirit.

I think you hit the nail on the head every verse.

26. We are exposed to so much filth today. There are many false paths leading away from Jesus and eternal life. Many are decieved into them because maybe they give instant gratification or maybe it makes life easier. The only straight path towards Him does not give instant gratification.

27. We cannot learn everything by what others tell us. We have to dive into to Word of God and lean on the Holy Spirit for understanding. And how great is that gift! To actually be able to read the very words from God Himself to His people!

28. Oh yes I believe that verse is taking to those who will be alive for the second coming of Christ. With the way the world is going we definitely see bible prophecy unfolding. We must be ready!

29. We were created in God's image and Jesus is the Son of the father, we must try our best every day to let other see the Son in us through our words and actions!

Like I said I think you hit the nail on the head I completely agree =)

†. 1John 2:27 . . And as for you, the anointing which you received from him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in him.

It's easy to misunderstand that verse to suggest that the Lord's sheep can get by on their own without the assistance of Bible teachers. But according to Eph 4:11-14, Bible teachers are Christ's gift to his church; and essential to its maturation.

What that verse is really saying, in a roundabout sort of way, is that the "anointing" enables the Lord's sheep to recognize the truth when they hear it, and after recognizing it; to accept it. That is a tremendous advantage over the average rank and file pew warmer; and without it, nobody would know what to believe.

NOTE: a detail easily overlooked in the study of John's first epistle is that it wasn't addressed to the average rank and file pew warmer; but specifically to an elite category of believers who were in possession of eternal life even before the letter arrived.

†. 1John 5:13 . . These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.

Therefore, this epistle is exclusive; in other words: if you don't already possess eternal life, then this epistle is really none of your business and you are tampering with other people's mail.

An additional detail easily overlooked is that people who don't have eternal life; don't have God's son; in other words they are quite christless.

†. 1John 5:11-12 . . God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has the Son has the life; he who doesn't have the life, doesn't have God's son.

NOTE: the above verse represents the testimony of God as an expert witness in all matters pertaining to His own son; and refusal to accept it is tantamount to insinuating that Jesus' Father is a person of questionable integrity who can't be trusted to tell the truth. (1John 5:9-10)

People in a christless condition are in grave danger of the wrath of God.

†. Rom 8:9 . . If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Yes, the daily, prayerful feeding on the Word is essential.
