Bible Study 1 John 5:16-17

1 John 5:16-17

King James Version (KJV)

16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

1 John 5:16-17

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.

These are my thoughts please share yours.

16 Sins that lead to death are those are listed by Paul. Believers may fall to these sins but will not live to do these sins. We are to pray for them if they are of the faith they will want to overcaome their sin. If they are in God's fellowship, He will lead them out of their sin. All sin can be forgiven but the sin of dieing without Jesus as Lord. Believers are not to be slaves to the sins but be servants to the Lord.

17 Unrighteousness is not being what the Lord wants us to be. Sin is not following God's will, wheter action by comitting sin or by not doing what God called us to do.

John 3:16-18 (NASB95)
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The sin that leads to (the second) death.

16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

I hope this helps....The "sin that leads to death" Back in 1974 when I knew that the Lord was calling me to be a preacher, my Pastor let me go out with him when he had to help someone. A man who was a member of our church who was a drunk was in trouble. This man would get drunk, land in jail, get out and confess before the church and ask for forgiveness. this happened many times. This night when I was out with my pastor, we pulled the man out of a bar and took him home. On the way into his house he turned and punched me right between the eyes, driving my glasses into my nose. When Pastor and I were going home he said "I think this man is comitting the "sin unto death". A few months later, he was driving home drunk, overturned his car, landed in a ditch with only a few inches of water and drowned. This event taught me this sin up close. I guess you could say it is a sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, death!

The sin that does not lead to death is found in James 5:19,20 "My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins". (ESV) In this last case "death" may be referring to dead spiritually.
