Navy has nothing to be ashamed of today. They went up against #10 South Carolina and were supposed to get blown out. Instead, they fought an even match up until the end. The Gamecocks won 24-21, but didn't have control of the game until the last half of the fourth quarter.

Both teams played successful defense as the ball went back and forth. Expect South Carolina to drop in the rankings and Navy had better get some ranking votes.

Now we're talking! Navy came #42 in the rankings (Only the top 25 are officially ranked). Navy also came in #21 in the Yahoo rankings (which don't count for anything).

Army's Black Knights are talking big on their website, gloating about last week's victory over the Wildcats. But neither team had any ranking votes to begin with, and Army's close win didn't get them any respect.

This Saturday they'll face the Ball State Cardinals (2-1) who also won a close victory over an unranked team last week. Neither team has any ranking votes, so don't expect any respect, even if Army wins.

But the military's "most improved" team is on its way up, and if they keep up the pace they should overcome their slow start.

Navy has nothing to be ashamed of by losing to the #10 team by three points. They have this Saturday off, and then they play Air Force in two weeks. All their seats were sold out weeks ago, as military fans are really looking forward to this one.

Air Force gets ready for this Saturday's game against the Tennessee State Tigers. After winning their opener, the Tigers have lost two straight games, while Air Force is suffering from the loss of two of their starters due to injuries.

I have been using the Yahoo Users' Poll, which is always open to voters, so its rankings change frequently. Right now, the Falcons are ranked #30 out of 79 teams, while the Tigers aren't listed. I'm looking for an Air Force victory but no ranking votes in the real poll.

It's Saturday, September 24, 2011, and I'll start with the bad news.

Ball State controlled the game from beginning to end as they beat Army 48-21. Army didn't complete a single pass during the game. Let me repeat that: Army didn't complete a single pass during the game. Army's 402 rushing yards are impressive, but this team is in trouble.

But the hapless Tennessee State Tigers didn't know what to do when they got into the wild blue yonder, as Air Force pounded them 63-24. Dominating all four quarters, the Falcons set a school record of 792 yards of offense. It was also the highest number of points ever scored against the Tigers.

And there's more good news for the Falcons. They have lost two starters for the rest of the season, due to injuries. Today, freshman Jonathan Lee carried the ball for the first time--for a 49 yard touchdown.

The Tigers did make two fantastic plays, snatching the ball from a Falcon one yard before he scored and getting themselves a touchback, and making an 80 yard touchdown run.

The rankings are out, and Navy has advanced four places to #38. Pretty good, considering that they didn't play this week.

Army and Air Force received no ranking votes.

Army (1-3) is gearing up for the Tulane Green Wave (2-2) this Saturday. Tulane hasn't has a winning season since 2002, and they're enthused about succeeding this year. With no mention of either team in the Yahoo Users' Poll, this looks like an even match between two weak teams.

I'm proud of Coast Guard Academy.

They not only got their website straightened out, but they've won their first game of the year.

The Bears snapped a seven-game losing streak that extends back to last year to defeat Massachusetts Maritime Academy 61-30. The Bears are now 1-3.

Tomorrow's game between Navy and Air Force will be the biggest one of the year for us, due to a statistical oddity:

The three-way match between the military academies can only have two outcomes. Either every team will go 1-1, and Air Force will keep the President's Cup that it won last year; or one team will win both games, one team will lose both games, and one team will go 1-1.

It is almost certain that Army will lose both games. So whoever wins tomorrow will probably go 2-0 and win the series.

Navy is the favorite, although Air Force has the most rushing yards. Each team has only lost one game, and that was to a ranked team. But while TCU soundly defeated Air Force, Navy only lost by three points to South Carolina.

The ever-changing Yahoo Users' Poll ranks Navy at 35, and Air Force at 43.

In Navy's last 17 games against the other two academies, Navy has only lost one: when Air Force beat them last year. Look for a real grudge match tomorrow.

It's Saturday, October 1, and I'm trying to get up off the floor.

Army pounded Tulane 45-6! The Black Knights led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, and Tulane never scored again.

Has Army gotten its act together?

And with 28 points apiece, Air Force and Navy are going into overtime.

October 1, 2011 Part 2

Tulane scored a touchdown but blew the extra point, giving them a 6-0 lead over Army. And then the Green Wave collapsed into a series of penalties and fumbles while Army played a grim and aggressive game.

After failing to complete a single pass last week, Army did well throwing but still relied heavily on rushing.

Don't look for any ranking votes, Folks, but hopefully, the Black Knights will be getting a little respect.

October 1, 2011 Part 3

In a chiller diller thriller that went down to the last seconds, Air Force beat Navy 35-34.

Man, do the Falcons have some explaining to do. Leading 21-3 at halftime, the Falcons had a rough second half as Navy outscored them 25-7, sending the two teams into overtime at 28-28.

Receiving the kick-off, Navy slogged down the field for a touchdown but then missed the extra point. When they received the kick-off, Air Force quickly scored and got the extra point.

Statistically, this is a problem for military academy fans. Navy will certainly lose its few ranking votes, and Air Force will not be getting any, either.

And Army, which outplayed both teams today, is back in the running for the President's Cup.

Ewww, there's going to be some chewing out at Annapolis this week. Remember how missing the extra point cost the Midshipmen the game? It seems that after scoring the touchdown, they were penalized for "excessive celebration." That made it possible for the Falcons to block the extra point.

A little military strategy here, Sailors. You don't stop firing your anti-aircraft guns until the plane is shot down.

October 1, 2011 Part 5

More on that bizarre penalty call that cost Navy the game.

After scoring a touchdown, the Navy player headed for the sidelines. He claims that an Air Force player blocked him, and the Navy player said "Move." The referee explained that the Navy player "got in the face" of an Air Force player after scoring. Forced to kick the extra point from 35 yards, Navy was blocked.

An embarrassed Air Force coach admitted that with an 18 point lead in the fourth quarter, Air Force started thinking about the next game and almost lost as a result. This is the second time this season that the Falcons quit playing while the game was still in progress.

It's Sunday, October 2, 2011, and the rankings are out.

No military team got any ranking votes.

In the unofficial Yahoo Users' Poll, Air force moved up eight places to #37. Navy dropped five places to #41. Army didn't make the poll.

Folks, I found a video of the Navy-Air Force overtime, and it is difficult to catch, but after he scored a touchdown, Navy player #2 shoved an Air Force player out of his way as they were separating themselves from the pile-up. Good call by the referee.

Army is so busy shouting over their 45-6 pounding of Tulane that it's hard to find out about this weeks' game. The Black Knights will be playing the Miami (Ohio) Red Hawks, and West Point is hoping for two wins in a row.

In addition to being America's second-ranked rushing team, Army completed all three passing attempts last Saturday. The problem, Folks, is that Miami hasn't won a game all season, losing 27-0 last week. That's a problem? It is if you want to get some ranking votes.

Miami is 120th in the nation in running, and Army is 120th is passing. The difference is that Army is #2 in rushing, while Miami is #38 in passing. I'm looking for an Army massacre but no ranking votes.

For the second week in a row, Air Force will have its hands full as it goes up against #30 Notre Dame. And Notre Dame has a score to settle: the last time they met, the Falcons won by the biggest margin of any military team against NotreDame in history.

Having had their attitudes adjusted by Air Force last week, Navy (2-2) goes up against Southern Mississippi (4-1) for the first time this Saturday.

The Golden Eagles put in some extra practice this week as they prepare for Navy's unusually strong triple-option offense, but they're looking forward to the game. But I was surprised to see that despite their good record, Southern Mississippi isn't even listed in the Yahoo Users' Poll. With 17 winning seasons in a row, the Golden Eagles are only playing weak teams, and I'm predicting a tough time for both teams this Saturday.

Officially, the Citadel is not a military academy, but it has produced many fine military officers. They won last week and are now 2-2.

They'll have their hands full this Saturday with the 3-1 Wofford Terriers. The Terriers have played a rougher schedule so far this season, and they are #4 in the 1-AA Poll. So what, pray tell, is the 1-AA? It seems to be the second-highest division of the NCAA. And if Citadel can beat them, the Bulldogs will have something to bark about.
