These are my thoughts, please share.
John writes this letter to a friend named Gaius, who he cared for very much enough so he took time to send him a personal letter. Gaius shared the faith and may have heard the gospel from John. John was the last of the twelve disciples of Jesus to die which is why he is referred to as the elder and why people believe he wrote this letter.

Hi Clark, this greeting in verse one and statement in verse two are tremendous. I agree with you that John really loved this man in the faith. A lot of "faith healers" have used this verse as a proof that God wants every one healed. "I pray that all may go well with you, and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul". The prosperity gospel preachers use these verses as well. They don't see that this was only a greeting and prayer from John, to someone he loves and not doctrine.

I have led folk to the Lord over the years, and verse four is so exciting to me, to hear of those who have gone on to serve the Lord and to be faithful....So RIGHT ON BROTHER!:goodpost
