Bible Study 4 Horsemen of Rev 6

The four horsemen in Revelation 6 correspond exactly with Jesus' Mt. of Olives prophecy about the end-times.

Rev 6:2 - White Horse -----Matt. 24:5 - Deception

Rev 6:4 - Red Horse ------ Matt. 24:6 - Wars

Rev 6:5 - Black Horse ---- Matt. 24:7 - Famines

Rev 6:8 - Pale Horse ---- Matt. 24:7 - Pestilence

Matthew 24 compared with the first four seals of Revelation 6.

***********************************************

Only a few commentaries even mention Jesus' prophecy in Matthew 24 (also Mark 13; Luke 21) as a key to interpreting the Four Horsemen.

One of them seems almost surprised that Jesus foretold the exact same series of signs -- sixty years before -- to His disciples!

Why should Matt. 24 and Rev. 6 be any different when the same Revelator communicated both prophecies?

They are parallel.

They aren't different and yes, they are parallel.

Matthew 24 compared with the first four seals of Revelation 6:

1st, FALSE TEACHING about Christ, doing away with His true Gospel.

2nd, WARS, climaxing at this crisis at the close of this age in WORLD WARSâ€â€nation against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. We are now in the second recess between stages of WORLD WAR!

3rd, FAMINE, and 4th, PESTILENCE, or epidemics of DISEASE which follow in the wake of great famines and wars.

The Olivet Prophecy consists of a series of signs of the end. The book of Revelation identifies itself as a disclosure from Jesus Christ of "things which must shortly take place."

It is plain that Revelation is a book concerned with the events of the end time that crescendo at Christ's return; and Jesus' prophecy in Matthew 24 covers the same ground.

We would be derelict not to compare the two.

In the Matt 24/Rev 6 comparison, I would place --

Rev 6:8 - Pale Horse ---- equate to Matt 24:9-13 tribulation

Thank the Lord for some 'new' thoughts.

A comparison for me is the story Christ gave about the seeds, Matt 13:3-9. There are 4 stages in this story. The stages are seen in different perspective: Either independent happenings or cumulative (stage 1, 2, 3, & 4 all happen to the same individual/group/community/nation..etc.).

  • Matt 13:3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying,
    "Behold, the sower went out to sow;

4 .....fell beside the road, ....Rev 6:2 White Horse

    5,6...rocky places ...............Rev 6:4 - Red Horse

7 .....among the thorns ........Rev 6:5 - Black Horse

    8 .....good soil......................Rev 6:8 - Pale Horse

Matt 13:9 " He who has ears, let him hear." Rev 3:22/Rev 13:9

Restin, I believe you are correct. Famine would be part of the third seal. The fourth seal would be death. (start of the great tribulation)

The Seals, & the Seeds

Compare Revelation 6:1-8 the Seals with Matthew 13:3-23
-- the parable of the seeds.

1st -- The gospel falls on ears that do not 'understand' and the
evil one snatches it away. (MT 13:4 & 19)

2nd -- The gospel call comes a 2nd time, springs up but falls
away under 'affliction' and'persecution' (vs5,6 & 21)

3rd -- The gospel call comes a 3rd time, the man hears, but
worry and deceitfulness of wealth make it unfruitful. (v7 & 22)

4th -- The gospel call comes a 4th time -- bears fruit and the
people of God are 'sealed' (v8 & 23) Death consumes the bodies of the
ones who are 'sealed' and God has 'taken' them to spare them from any
further evil in this earth. Isaiah 57:1,2

  • Revelation 6:9 "I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been
    slain
because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they
    had maintained;"
As time continues, I am more convinced the same message is repeated again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, with more intensity as time gets closer to the second coming of Jesus Christ. The messages Paul (Rom, Gal, Eph) and John (Revelation) wrote are similar, just put in a different frame of understanding. Now, here in Matthew finding the repetition in the teachings of the Master himself.

Praise God,
.....Restin
