My eyes got a little wet, too.
... oh, and even tho he could not see them, and did not make radio contact, they WERE being paced by the military. I think the goofy ATC instructions were to test them, to see if they'd comply.
Scary stuff. Did ya notice that this pilot KNEW he'd be shot down if he mis-behaved? Fact is, it surprised all of us, but not people who fly for a living and have had to think about "what if..." There is more to flying a jetliner than "stick and rudder" stuff.
We all changed that day, didn't we? I guess most generations live with historic things: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Cold War, 9-11, etc.
