this is from a man that I know on fb that is named Rocky Spear. he lived where I do. the time frame of that is here in this pic till the end of the war(the pic is dated in 1943) and the base was built in 1940
My grandfather used to walk the beach at night with a Stevens double barrel shotgun as part of the volunteers that did exactly what you're talking about. They stayed at it 24/7 with no pay and only family and county by county support.some mini jap subs were retrieved not 5 or so mikes from the UDT-SEAL museum in the Ft. Pierce inlet. A German sub elsewhere, but that's another story bro.
