A bullet attachment that could save lives?

It looks like a toy attachment for a gun, but this new device is intended to give suspects a chance to live if shot. CNN's Sara Sidner reports. More from CNN at http://www.cnn.com/

Using one of those would require a lot of discipline.

I thought the grey areas where less than lethal is warranted were covered by Tasers? This is a hokey gimmick, but as much as the police shoot people, they should have it, and be mandated to have to use one of these for the first shot, always.

That thing has no place in a civilians battary. We're not even supposed to draw a firearm unless death or grave bodily harm is imminent. So shooting someone with one of these would demonstrate that the situation is not life threatening, and may just get you in trouble.

Rules of engagement are different for civilians and cops.

mixed feelings. the army will likely go to this as well. for the mp corps and the guard as well.

That's the last thing the Army needs. I see this thing as just a PR tool. An attempt to make the cops look like they care. They clearly do not. Most of them at least.

the army has tasers, notice I said for the mp corps and the national guard. the army does have arresting powers granted to it in ft.mead, Maryland. by the state and civilian powers. the national guard in all 50 has at one time or another responded to riots and civil disburbances.

I do think that cops , those that are good at what they do and like it, do care and try not to shoot. I have seen a riot nearly start over a mentally insane man who was killed. they shot him twice with tasers then the supervisor who had the shot gun killed him. they didn't have to go that far.

Absolutely brother. Some do care. Ime, typically the older guys (but not all of them!).

I would beg to differ. the older guys have to fto the rookies. you don't take a rookie and have him trained by a cop that just got off probation of two years. fto is a few weeks long with the cpd but the probation is two years. so if they fail then its a problem that will be addressed. im not saying there aren't corrupt law enforcement agencies. but im not seeing that here.

WOW now the bad guys wont shoot to kill the cops.. Sure would have saved the lives of those cops shot a few weeks back.. good deal. we should supply these free for the taking no questions asked to all the bad guys...

Yeah, that's why I said not all of them, lol. I've met those guys too. After their training though, they're still young men, perhaps with pride problems, perhaps gung ho. I think that's what does it to them.

I envy you that you live in a place where they seem to be reasonable. We're very militarized here, so the absolute power attitude has trickled down to the city police force and Sherrifs, and my somewhat innocuous and infrequent interaction with them has shown corruption through the cracks.

I try not to see the uniform but the man.

guns can do the same. I can post the wingnuts locally. one of them locally is out there.

What's a wingnut?

The gun sure can do the same, especially when coupled with the knowledge that the dept will back him up if he caps anyone.

but the reason they have that stuff is why? oh those gangsters, they don't have fully auto weapons. high powered weapons. they don't make bombs. nah they don't do that. I feel safe knowing that cop should go back to muskets. a wingnut as person so much into private rights they appear to not believe in any codes or regulation of a home they own. I would sell them a cheap rickety home just because. that is what I mean.

he wasn't arrested and im glad the homeowner wasn't, the cops made a mistake and the owner wasn't charged.

well of course they need them. But some guys when they get to own a pistol it makes them grow two feet and they start thinking that they don't have to take crap off of anyone. I wish someone would mess with me, they say. You know the type. The worst type to be a cop.

I think it would be cool if police was a rotating job. with people that do not want to be a cop. Civic duty. Everyone does two weeks per year or some such. That would be cool.

I wouldn't want to see some poorly trained civilian doing the work of a fully trained & experienced officer.

Depending upon the state and locality, the training an officer must complete is very exhaustive. Many potential officers don't graduate from the training programs. Those who do graduate from the training programs (which can last up to 3 months, depending), still have to survive their 'rookie' training. Some don't make the grade during that time period and are let go. On some departments, the 'rookie' time can be a year or longer; some have shorter time periods. Still, the training is extensive.

Civic duty? It's difficult for a lot of counties to have enough election judges at each polling location. And I'd much rather see the majority of people serve as an election judge as opposed to a short-term law enforcement officer.

I did think about that after I clicked post, lol. Of course you are right, that is a lot of training, but still, what a cool system it would be if it could be worked out somehow. The idea being of course that more normal people would have a little more restraint than typical officers. That would save lives.
