In Luke 22 Jesus tells the disciples that when they enter the city they will see A MAN CARRYING A PITCHER OF WATER.
They are to follow him and the house he enters will be where they prepare the last supper.
Of course everything occurs just as Jesus has predicted.
Two things are strange about this - first, in Israelite society, carrying water was WOMEN’S WORK. And second, if men carried liquid, it would be in a leather bag, not the earthenware pitcher designated in Luke.
The southwest corner of Jerusalem contained an Essene quarter of the city. Many Essene communities were male-only - hence there would be no women to carry water.
Something is significant about this. But there may have been two different SABBATHS involved in the last week of Jesus’ life - a possible answer to certain arguments I have heard on messageboards about which day the last supper was on.
If anyone has any info about this “Essene quarter” of the city, this thread will be a place to discuss these matters. I read a book from the public library about this Essene Quarter, and will try to find it again.
