Bible Study a rope around the high priest ankle .

ok so we had this discussion in wed bible study. they allegedly tied a rope around the high priest ankle . when he entered the holiest of hollies . in case he messed up or died when presenting the yearly sacrifice. personally i do not find it in scripture and nor do i agree with the rope . we once visited Eureka springs ark. they have a tabernacle in the wilderness there . along with a high priest that gives a tour . along with answering questions . this was brought up he said it was not true. mind this man was a messianic jew. so i would like to see where the rope comes in. {his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not .}
Exodus 28

31 And thou shalt make the robe of the ephod all of blue.

32 And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent.

33 And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:

34 A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about.

35 And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not.

You're right, there is nothing in the Bible to support the idea of a rope around the ankle - or leg - of the High Priest who entered the Holy of Holies. But, it is mentioned a couple of times in the Zohar. It's something I've heard in Bible Study as well.

Rope Around the High Priest

Question: There’s a belief that the High Priest had a rope tied around his waist when he entered the Holy of Holies in the Temple during Yom Kippur (to pull him out should G-d judge him unfit and take his life). Do you know the source of this belief?

Answer: Thank you very much for your interesting question. I discussed it with an experienced educator here in Baltimore, Rabbi Moshe Oppen, and he said that the source is actually in two places in the Zohar: in Parshas Acharei Mos (67a), and in Parshas Emor (102a). What it actually says is that a golden rope was tied around the High Priest’s leg.

Additionally, in the Artscroll Edition of the Talmud, Yoma Vol. II, on Daf 53b footnote 25, there is extensive discussion about this statement of the Zohar and it’s Halachic ramifications.

Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler

but if he did not get things right he would not have made it through the first section . my self i go by this that he die not . thanks for the post

The rope probably refers to Exodus 28:13-14;
Concerning the Ephod, "Make gold filigree settings and two braided chains of pure gold, like a rope, and attach the chains to the settings".

So the gold rope was attached to the Ephod that the high priest wore.

If I was a priest and the High Priest just died because he was of the wrong bloodline I'm not going into the Holy of Holies...and you couldn't leave a dead body in there either. I would want to be the last guy on the rope.

During the Hasmonean period the High Priest died each year on Atonement Day. Till they got the right bloodline as high priest it didn't end. And that rope got used a lot.

Is there any written record of that?

how can it be of the wrong bloodline? God would have zapped them in the outer court .personally i do not buy into the rope tied around him

OK, shooting from the hip here.
One of the Levites families was banned from Temple service by Moses or he said that the high priest had to be of a particular lineage. Can't remember why.

Then about ten years ago I was dating a Jewish woman who had converted to Christianity. We were discussing this topic about bells and rope and she said something like this:

During one of the Roman or Greek rule the king didn't like the high priest so he replaced him with a weasel and where the people whined the weasel served till atonement day when he would die. This happened for several years till they appointed one of the proper bloodline.

So last night I went and looked at the records. Several periods had high priests serving only one year. And Hasmonean wasn't one of them. I did find a six year stint where no one was high priest... I'm wondering if this was the period because of the incident of a priest dying in the holy of holies every year.

And Jewish Record keeping is maddening. Systematic but maddening.

Question:
the High priests were the only ones allowed in the Holy of Holies
the high priest were of Arrons line
other levits had the 'lesser' responsibilities
if a bad guy went in there those trying to get him out the bodies would have just piled up

No rope. No dead high priests in the holy of holies that I've found in scripture.

Did hear it preached a couple times though in the charismatic realm. And usually, for condemnation. If the bells stop tinkling with the fruit around the hem of your garment, you were basically a goner.

And they used it to pry out the wallet, typically. Very good at it too.

I've just spoken to a Jewish believer in Christ who is in his 50's, and says such a thing is highly unlikely and never heard of in his lifetime.

That was king herod,the rabbi hillel sent trained levites to run things

Matthew 27:50 KJV
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Hebrews 9:3 KJV
And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Jesus now ever liveth to make intercession for us.
Hebrews 7:25 KJV
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Our High priest will never die again. No rope needed. He died once.

Forgetting.
Philippians 3:13 KJV
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

I am not smart enough to exactly describe the two veils, or the symbolism of a mind of understanding veiled. I do know the reality of Christ Jesus is the body that cast the shadows back into the past.

And Jesus didn't go into a copy of God's throne as the Temple here on earth is... He went into the real one in Heaven.
